we have a cat named Aiva who is about 11 or 12. we took her in for a rabies vaccination and a general checkup because she has lost a lot of weight. we thought she might have a thyroid condition like Neko did.

We got the results from the blood work today.

The Vet thinks its Feline Leukemia.

We are very lost right now, and not sure what to do at this point. The best thing seems to be to have her put down.

This is very difficult. she was the first cat we got together. and we love her so much.

prayers, happy thoughts, good vibes for FMA_Fanatic and myself please.

Cat: You're right. We're Nuts! This is an insane conversation....
Lister: She'll never leave Fred and we know it.

I'm so sorry. We lost a kitten to FeLuke years ago.

My only question is "thinks?" The tests should show pretty conclusively...

    *hugs*

The vet did not test specifically for feline leukemia. He was testing for thyroid and diabetes. While the thyroid count was high, he claims her blood count was low (?) and the likely cause was FelLuc. I did not speak to the vet though, FMA-Fanatic did.We will prob take her in for a specific test to confirm. He did seem to imply that if it wasn't that it was probably some other type of cancer.

He said that her white blood cell count was very low and that she was anemic. His words were "I have no idea how she's still moving around."

I'm going to try and get an appointment so DaDairyDruid can get her in for the FeLV test tomorrow.

        DDD: Cuz it's cool

So, by using the Doctor's reasoning, bow ties, fezzes and bandanas are cool.

Good new is that it is not FeLuke. It is most likely Cancer. The vet cannot feel a mass so it is most likely in the alimentary canal or bone marrow.

As we cannot afford to se a specialist, we have decided to say goodbye.

We will be taking her in Saturday afternoon.

Well, hold on a minute. Does she seem to be suffering or in pain? If so, putting her to sleep would be in her best interest. But if she seems happy despite losing weight, you might consider waiting to see how she does.

We appreciate your concern, but second guessing the situation is not helping. The vet has said that there is nothing we can do without taking her to a specialist, and has recommended this course of action.

It's not your fault. We're both raw right now. Aiva got progressively worse to the point that she fell a couple of times and was crying out in pain. She hid how much she was hurting from us for as long as she could.

We had a friend and her daughter come and stay with us (me mostly because DaDairyDruid had to work late), and she had a terrible fall where she just laid there. We did all we could, fed her a yummy treat of moist food and she spent her last hours by herself by the water dish.

In the end it was the best thing we could have done for her. She's with her kitty friend Neko now and enjoying a nice, pain free afterlife.

I was insensitive. I'm so sorry about your kitty baby ; she's lucky she had a human family who cared so much about her.

                              What I posted on FB

dear God, into your hands we commit the soul of Aiva, with all the little bits of soul she collected from those who love her. let Neko greet her. Let her know peace. let there be sunny spots to nap in. angels to hold her in their laps and pet her. and joy. Amen
