You have no idea how many times I have gone to antiques auctions with my Mom and her other dealer buddies and listened to them pointing out the damage done to the actual antiques [and their preserved value] by aggressive cleaning 'to spiff it up for auction so it will look better and sell better' I think one of the worse drops in value was a chippendale chair that someone took down to the bare wood and revarnished with synthetic high gloss varnish. Dropped it from almost $100K to $5K
Shall I say that it would be worlds better to contact a museum and ask them the best way to deal with any specific antique?
And PLEASE, NEVER EVER TAKE STEEL WOOL OR CHEMICAL CLEANERS TO METAL WITHOUT ASKING A MUSEUM OR RESTORER FIRST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
