  • Don't Lie to Dad

    He will find out.

A customer came in Friday afternoon (why do they always wait until the very end of the day?) saying that there were two charges on his son's checking account that his son claimed he didn't authorize. They were both processed through the son's debit card, so he asked me to hot card and close the debit card.

Since the dad was on his son's account, I was able to talk with him about it. I agreed to hot card the debit card. Then we looked at the transactions.

The first one was a recurring transaction that was coming from a particular website. He agreed to follow up with that website. He told me later that the transactions had been coming out of the checking account since at least July. Way to read your statements.

The second transaction was an ATM withdrawal. At our ATM. In our lobby. With a camera prominently displayed right above it. I told the dad that we would check the video and give him a call.

So we pulled up the video. Yep, it was him. The dad asked if he could see. He came in this morning, and we showed him the video. While we watched the first few seconds, the dad said his son had changed his story and told him that he had gone to the ATM, but he had only checked his balance - he hadn't withdrawn any cash. As we continued to watch, the son's lie unraveled. He clearly had two receipts and cash in his hand.

The dad left with this information, saying he would have a talk with his son. He didn't sound happy.

Not a bad prospect. I am not afraid. In the meantime, let me close my eyes and sense the beauty around me. And take that breath under the dark sky full of stars. Breathe in. Breathe out. That's all."

He's not gonna be the only one...

Nice catch, Ghel, glad you could help dad get to the bottom of things. If it's not too much disclosure, did you see what the website was? I'm gonna go out on a limb and say it wasn't a subscription to Christian Science Monitor online.

The website listed for the transaction was a site that processes payments for other websites. So I have no idea where the charge originated.

        Let's hope the idiot didn't fall for a 419.

This might sound like a really stupid question, but what's a 419?

419 scam -- the nigerians who send emails saying you've won the lottery and want you to pay $299 for processing. 419 is the law code (or something like that) in Nigeria that prohibits this sort of thing.

I've recently picked up the hobby of busting them.

I don't think it was a 419. For one thing, the amounts involved were less than $100 each. I just think the young man didn't want to admit to his dad where he was spending his money.

This same young man lost his license for a few months, within the past year, due to DUI. I understand he lost his job, perhaps related to the DUI. He has an auto loan with us, and the parents are making the payments while the son's out of work. So the dad has valid reasons for wanting to make sure his son's not spending his money frivolously.

Very likely for an adult website of some sort. VERY likely.

Reminds me of what my coworker just told me. Turns out, he got a membership in something. At the end of his membership, he decided not to renew, and canceled the membership. HOWEVER, apparently becoming a member of this one group automatically enrolled him in another group he had no knowledge of and never authorized. This 2nd unknown membership had been taking dues of about 30$ a month for the last several years. It was only recently he noticed this regular automatic payment and investigated. So he's paid over $5,000 to a group he had no clue he was a member of! I told him get a lawyer on it fast.
