They also have systems now that will shut a car off whenever you're late with a payment. Genius.

Saw it on the news. They're mostly used, it seems, with used cars bought by people with iffy credit situations.

Yeah, it's a similar setup to the bait cars police use. If you miss a payment, they activate the device which cuts the power. Some of the more elaborite ones also use a GPS transmitter so the repo people can recover it quickly.

              Wow.

Thanks for the reminder to go set up my car payment in advance.

Never have understood the "take car away" or "lock it so it can't start" if you miss a payment ---- exactly how are you supposed to get to work so you can make payments?

But the the drunk driving thing, I knew a guy (friend of a friend -- but made town news). He got arrested for drunk driving in winter after leaving a bar. Now that doesn't sound too unusual right? Well...... once you consider he wasn't driving, he wasn't in the driver's seat, had called someone to pick him up (the bar knew it), and he was only waiting in the car since the bar closed for his ride it seems a bit dumb. That's right. It was below zero, dangerous conditions to be outside (snowstorm and everything), and he had the "nerve" to have the car running so he wouldn't freeze to death while waiting for his friend to pick him up. The cop knocked on the window to wake him up (yep, was sleeping too).

He got a DUI for not wanting to freeze to death -- and he wasn't even driving; I guess sleeping under the influence is illegal too if you do it in a car. (As it was, the bar couldn't keep him inside, some local regulation or something about once they're closed, everyone had to be out or something.)

But yeah... for the others, doesn't bother me at all that they have to blow into a device. If they had to blow into the device constantly (like if the blowing controled the gas flow) wouldn't bug me. I've seen the flip side of people I've known getting killed due to alcohol.

He should have fought that. If I'd have been in that situation, I'd have fought it tooth and nail, and been calling every news outlet I could get in touch with.

As for the re-tests on those ignition interlock systems: How many accidents has that caused? Unless it's a system that engages the delay after the car has been moving, and then prompts for the retest when the car is not moving, then it's just an accident waiting to happen.

Although I really do like the idea of the things. Anything to keep more drunk assholes off the roads.

Here's a nice little site about them, if you want to do a little research.

I don't want to be an enemy of the people, but...even if his friend does back him up, there is no way that it really can be backed up. For all the policeman knows, the guy was going to drive his car but he feel asleep at the wheel before he moved. Yeah, the friend will say "well he called me" but of course the friend will back up his friend, though the friend probably was never called. On the other hand, I can see how a person would wait in the car with the heat on not to freeze, but it could happen that he could wake up, be disoriented, start driving the car not remembering that his friend was going to pick him up.

Don't teach me a lesson; all I learn is that you are an asshole.

I was going to reply to the other one -- but that basically summed it up. The cop said he had no way of knowing (despite everyone saying it, bar people included). I think he got off really light for it (almost a slap on the wrist type of thing), so in the end it ended being more of a lesson of "have the driver with you next time" than anything really bad on his record.

The cop actually (from what I heard) said "how do I know you weren't in the driver's seat, see me and move over?" And apparently fake being asleep on top of it.

In the UK there's a separate charge,, "Drunk in Charge of a Vehicle", which this would cover.

If you're not in the driver's seat that shouldn't count.
I can see a cop being able to make a valid argument that if you're in the driver's seat you may have been driving or may have intended to drive, but being in the passenger seat or the back seat (where I would go just to avoid issue) obviously removes intention of operating the vehicle.
