Tama (and IPF once yer up and running again):

O&O Shut Up 10 might be what you're looking for. Auto updates are among the things it can block. Free app.

For the hard drive itself -- External USB shells can be found for 5 bucks or less online; with one of those, you should at least be able to recover old pics/videos, etc once yer on a new system

Oh goodie, it's not just me then.

My HP convertible laptop (that was still under warranty) wound up being returned today with my SO having to do a lot of the talking so I could try and keep my emotions in check and not go apeshit on people who had no control over this. Similar situation to IPF. My dad pointed out that he'd never had an issue with his HP all-in-one until I explained that his computer has vents

Thankfully not a lot on it (everything on there was backed up anyway but I literally only used it for Office and browsing).

I've got a very similar problem with my old computer. It just gets stuck in a loop of the very first screen. Windows or any other functions aren't even starting up. You've already taken steps above my knowledge and ability but if you are able to get things going, please post the solution. Sorry I can't give any help myself.

IPF, there is a stand-alone version of Gparted (a linux partition manager) which you can load on a usb drive and nuke the partitions on the hard drive and then install a fresh win 10 image. or if you are feeling in any way adventurous you could install linux instead and be free of the M$ curse

Not that I would suggest this "fix", but I was either emulating my old boss who would give the tv's a good wallopp to find the bad part, or I was just plain frustrated with it, but either way, I gave it a few good smacks and got some signs of life, a few more good smacks and it was up and running. Not the most technical fix available but effective anyways.

So the first thing you did was back up everything. Right?

Everything already was. It was my old computer that I took out of comission a couple years back. I finally got my office set up so I want(ed) it for a play around computer. So far so good.
