    Here we ran out of numbers because of the way they're given out. Here's a breakdown of American numbers, at least how they used to work:

    1 732 918 0423
    Country State Town Subscriber
    That is somewhat close.
    1= country code
    775= area code (in this case Northwest Nevada, most states have multiple codes, some larger cities have multiple codes as well)
    853= prefix (this indicates both the provider and the region within the area code, in this case ATT landline service in southwest Reno, as another example 530 would be Verizon Wireless service based in Washoe County).
    7272= subscriber (in this case Papa Murphy's take-n-bake pizza)

    The system actually works fairly well, as long as we don't run out of combinations for area codes we are in good shape... we may have to occasionally change numbers as further subdivision is required, but we won't be running out soon (there is 8billion different combinations that can be made with 10 digits).

      True, I was going with the original. When there was only one provider, it worked fine, and for all intents and purposes, phone numbers were only 7 digits, since most states only had one or two area codes (NJ was 201 and 609 when I was growing up). Having alternate providers nescitated going with over lapping area codes and ten digit numbers. That could've mostly been avoided by dividing the numbers into smaller groups.
