Close, but not quite. In California, the law says that if you have a machine, you must provide service to any paying customer for no additional charge.

However, all it takes to be a "paying customer" is to buy at least 5 cents worth of gas. So, people who know the law put down a nickel, name any pump they want, and tell the clerk to turn on the machine. Or, they take the easy route and buy a candy or something so there's no chance of argument.

$0.05 of gas?!? Why bother with uncapping your tank? I'd rather just drop the nickel in the air machine.

Here in the Philippines the air is free ... but, you sure aren't going to touch the hose or get near the machine. The workers will do that for you.

And, normally, one tips the workers P10-P20 (25 to 50 cents).

Air machines can cost anywhere from $0.25 to $1.00 to use when they're not free, and just because you've paid $0.05 for gas, doesn't mean you actually have to put in that $0.05 of gas. It's just a legal threshold for how little has to be spent to be a valid customer.
