I had a friend in high school who's family was rich. Not quite millionaire rich, but nearly.
The way they got that way was because the parents (father mostly) were completely and utter tightfisted pennypinchers. They were the type to either start fights so they'd get thrown out and not have to pay for their food, or otherwise start making a stink about how it was awful and get all loud and obnoxious so they'd either be comped, or thrown out.
She hated going out anywhere with her father because he'd do that. I don't know if he'd done the leftover eating thing, but it wouldn't surprise me.
