  • Yes, two dimes and a nickel do equal a quarter

I was in line at a produce store yesterday. In hand, I had my cucumber, bacon bits, and salad dressing. (really, making a salad, Kogo?)

There was this older lady in front of me with a few items. The girl at the cash made a mistake. Which is understandable. Workers at this store are required to memorize each and every code number for produce. So it's not very surprising if someone gets a code wrong. Well, BECAUSE she got this code wrong, the lady in front of me figured her to be some sort of idiot.

The lady's total came to six something, so she gave a ten and a dollar... so she could get a five dollar bill back. Guh... when I worked at Tim Hortons, we could never do that... give the patron a five back. Coin them, baby!

Anywho, the girl was kind enough to do as the lady wished, especially since the lady said, "I should get five dollars and two cents back from that."

And then she brought out some change and was like, "Can I exchange this for a quarter?"

She puts it in the girl's hand, and says, I kid you not, "That is two dimes and one nickel. That equals a quarter, dear."

Just because someone works in a grocery store doesn't make them stupid. Ugh.

To make matters worse, the girl hands her back all her change at once and the lady gets angry, "You forgot to give me my quarter."

"I gave it to you with your change."

"No you didn't!" Protested the lady, as she looked at her 27 cents and the five dollar bill.

"Yes ma'am. Your change was five dollars and two cents... and I also gave you the quarter."

The lady looks stricken, "Ah I'm so sorry! We all do make mistakes sometimes, you know."

    Wow...

She did sort of apologize (adding the appendum(sp) kind of voids the apology, in my opinon). But yeah, older lady was a bitch.
Time! Time! Time is what turns kittens into cats.

Don't teach me a lesson; all I learn is that you are an asshole.

    I wish porn had subtitles.

Uh... not quite, by any math I've ever used... 11.00-6.xy is going to be just under 5.00. If the old hag had given the xy cents as well, then yes, that nets her a 5 back...

Yeah, but the customers are the only ones who are able to get away with it. When we make mistakes we're idiots, rude, incompetent, disobedient, "typical", you name it.
The behaviour of some people is so disgusting they should be forever banished to a realm where shopping or being out in public would be an offense punishable by law.

Ah, okay, math works, then. Didn't mean to sound condescending.

I hated people like that when I was working in retail. Always wanted to talk back in that condescending tone "Yes I realise that thank you SO much for your help"

I'd have been tempted to offer "At least it was simple math, not anything abominable like getting the wrong code on a produce item."

But then, I think the sarcasm would be lost on someone like that anyway.

I'm not sure I understand why it's an issue to pay in a way to get a five back? The attitude was definitely out of order but if something came to six-something and the customer gives a ten, a one and the change... what's wrong with that, unless I'm reading this wrong.

It wasn't so much the wanting the five back (but at Tim Hortons we tended to guard our fives with our lives because we needed them), but the fact that she told the cashier that she was SUPPOSED to get a five back.
