And Malt-o-Meal cereals taste just as good as the name brands, while coming in a zip-top bag that keeps the cereal fresher longer (useful in a small household).

My list is nearly the same as Bandit's - bed and shoes (because if I'm not in one I'm in the other) and tyres, because that just makes sense. Also coffee - when I tried to economise by buying cheaper coffee, I just didn't drink any, so instead of saving money I ended up wasting it.Engaged to the sweet Mytical He is my Black Dragon (and yes, a good one) strong, protective, the guardian. Shoes.
I just spend $300 on three pairs today (just before learning I no longer have a job ) but they are GOOD shoes. One is a pair of Birkenstock sandals for around the house; last pair I had lasted at least 10 years. The other two pairs are for standing for long periods and since I no longer have a retail job, they are likely to last much longer than otherwise.
Several years ago I developed footsie problems and went to a foot specialist, who said to me, "You've spent a lot of years wearing cheap shoes, haven't you?" When I admitted to this, he said, "And now you're paying for it ..."
Started wearing good shoes and have had no problems since then.
Also wouldn't cheap out on underwear, LOL, but I won't go into a long song-and-dance about that.
Quoth KuariKaydrith View PostI've been there, but I've also realized that I'm not saving money when I buy food items I simply will not eat. For example, I can't stand chicken legs or wings so if I buy them they will sit in the freezer until they are beyond freezer burnt. However, I will eat chicken breasts, regardless of whether or not they are boneless, so I stock up on these when they're on sale. I've attempted to eat dollar store mac & cheese, but ended up tossing it out because I couldn't even choke it down.
I feel that it's more of a waste of money to buy foods that I can't/won't eat than to spend a bit extra on things I can and will eat. I just don't go overboard, and I use coupons and look for sales wherever I can.Last edited by Pixelated; 06-22-2018, 03:15 AM.Customer service: More efficient than a Dementor's kiss

Pix, thank you. I am having problems with one of my pairs of man-made sandals and I have been hemming and hawing about buying a pair of leather ones from a good company because I'm wanting to be cheap about it. I think I'm going to need to follow in your footsteps."Is it hot in here to you? It's very warm, isn't it?"--Nero, probably

Quoth Victory Sabre View PostBeer.
No way in hell will I buy BMC, even though it's twice as expensive to buy the good stuff. It's worth it.
Quoth Valentinian View PostBras. When you're an F cup, you need the good ones... though ironically, since my arthritis has gotten bad enough that it's hard to do up the normal ones, I've found $10 stretchy sports bras that do a good job. No idea how long they'll last though.
There are two other things I won't cheap out on (in context anyway):
- Jeans. Given I have a history of destroying the crotch in cheap jeans and the cheap brands these days only have two variants (skinny and straight, neither of which are flattering), I will pony up for a pair of bootcut jeans no problem.
- Gym gear. At least in the pants and shoes department anyway - similar reasons.Last edited by LadyofArc; 07-02-2018, 10:25 AM.
