Yesterday held a surreal moment for me. I found a listing on craigslist "needing reps NOW!" It had an address, phone number and website. I try the website and it doesn't work. Scam Alert 1 tripped.
So I call them and they say "Just come in and fill out an application and we can interview you today."
"Uuuh....okay," (articulate, ain't i?). Scam Alert 2 tripped.
Still, I get myself gussied up and go. It's a tiny little place in a strip mall. The cubicle farm looks like a lot of tables end to end and everyone is crammed together. Scam Alert 3 tripped.
I go through the application and talk to the manager. He asks me no "interview questions" just "Can you work days? You can't miss work for the first 90 days. Can you do that?" The whole time, he's also looking at his computer and yelling out "Okay, we need 14 more, guys! Let's try for 14 more!" Scam Alert 4 tripped.
"So when can you start?" he asks.
"Well, you have me down for Mon - Fri so, I can start next Monday," I said. He looks at his sheet and says, "How about tomorrow? I have one spot in my training class."
I mulled it over. I looked at all of my scam alerts.....and said screw it. "Yeah. I'll be here."
I'm starting at $8.50 an hour doing semi-warm calling. People sign up on a website and I call them about (services). I talk to them and see what (service) they want and send a note to (service providers). For every referral, I get a $5 commission. At the end of the pay period, I get either my base pay or my commission whichever is higher.
I reserve judgement on how well I can do, however. Selling is not my strong suit, but they say it's not like that. They signed up and we're calling them back. Doesn't mean they'll remember it or know what they were signing up for. But I need the money. So off to work I go.
