  • You're there to HELP as well as SELL...

I quote the entire conversation that I received from a genius phone store worker

    Me:explains what I'm looking for,what type of phone,camera,keyboard etc.
So which one do you think would be best for me?

Phone Drone:Well,I don't know. They're all over there,so yeah whatever, just choose what you want and bring it over.

Me:But I'm not sure which one I want..

Phone Drone: shrugs and walks away...

Seems like unless you had the phone in hand ready to buy and he could rack up a sale,he wasn't interested

If I talked to my customers that way, I'd be utterly, utterly ashamed of myself. I pride myself in helping my customers. I love doing it. If they're nice, of course. Most are in my current job.

100% agreed! It's not like you were demanding or asking for discounts, only some basic information.

One would think a salesperson would jump for joy to be able to help someone like you and make a good commission!

If I talked to my customers like that, I wouldn't be working in my department for long, we are required to find out the customers needs, and then take them through all the laptops/tablets/etc, to cover that need, no matter how long it takes us

All company or customer oriented motivation aside, if you're a salesman, at least be greedy and not lazy and just recommend the most expensive one! Wow, talk about shooting yourself in the foot.

Not that it excuses his behavior, but perhaps they don't give him a commission? So he has no incentive.

Exactly. If you're going to be lazy, just recommend the item that nets you the highest commission.

It IS his job, yes. But as we've seen, a lot of people sorely lack worth ethic these days. Witness Irv's rants about the people who he's had the 'pleasure' of working with.

Wow, if the salesperson who helped me pick out my laptop had been like that, I'd probably STILL not have one. I knew nothing - and he was extremely helpful.

Funny you should mention that. The OP could easily be describing our electronics "specialist" I put that in quotes because the position does not exist anymore; he's expected to help out in other departments as needed. But he just holes up in electronics getting nothing done all day, and getting him to help out elsewhere is like pulling your own teeth.

Generally he avoids customers as much as possible; if they ask him about features and differences between models he either BSs them or does the "they're all over there; let me know when you've picked something out" thing.

But if somebody else is close to making a sale, like I was a couple weeks ago on a Roku, he swoops in and tries to close the deal. He isn't even on commission.
