  • Tonsils went bye bye...

Not mine. My daughters did, and I had a hell of a day with her.

I dont think I realized how stubborn she was until today. Stubborn as in absolutely not eating or drinking anything and ended up prolonging the postop part (which is usually about 2 hrs max) to a 5.5 hr experience. So I was at the hospital for 8 hours today and I totally didnt get paid. Im so sore from sitting with her on my lap in that damn chair. My son was the complete opposite end of the spectrum for his tonsillectomy. He woke up quiet and ate and drank and we went home rather quickly.

Shes drinking now, but I have to keep reminding her and practically forcing her to drink as she looks at me resentfully.

Im in fear of her teenage years.

See if you can get her to eat some frozen grapes. My parents did that with me when I got my tonsils out. They slide down easily and the have the added benefit of being soothing.

      Aw, poor kid. And mom.

I've somehow managed to keep my tonsils, though there was a period where I kept getting throat infections and actually asked the doctor, At what point do you just get rid of them (I was in my late 20s at the time). She said Not yet. :-/

I just went to the doctor and said "she needs her tonsils out"....he said "Ok".

But, you can encounter more complications as an adult, but i dont think there are cut in stone guidelines for removing tonsils and adenoids. They can some out for a myriad of reasons. Keep track of your infections and if you dont need a referral through insurance to see a specialist (ENT), id recommend it. I was told for literally almost 2 years that the monthly infections my son was having were not related to his tonsils by my PCP. I got fed up (i know, it took me long enough) and just went to the ENT and he agreed with my assessment and my son literally has not been sick since then and that was 6 years ago. When my daughter started doing the same thing, i nipped it in the bud and took her to the same guy straight away.

Heh. Money in his pocket, reasonable suspicion by a mother who is a nurse (note the order), and complications are easily picked out (from what I understand of the surgery).
          Glad the kids are alright.

oh gods yes, had mine out at 22, what was supposed to be a quick outpatient/day surgery procedure, resulted in four days in the hospital, hooked up to a morphine pump, was sent home with 10mg sublingual morphine tablets. I couldn't talk for a week. I was miserable. Plus as an added bonus, my Eustachian tubes scarred almost shut on the ends, so I can't "pop" my ears, getting on a plane, I'm drugged, not only due to anxiety, but because my ears hurt so damn bad for the entire flight and at least an hour after.
Honestly.... the image of that in my head made me go "AWESOME!"..... and then I remembered I am terribly strange.-Red dazes

So shes minimally better today. She took some of the prescribed tylenol with codeine and was good for a few hours, but her stomach hurt afterwards (probably b/c she barely ate) so now shes just getting regular tylenol when shes not throwing up.

Im scared shes going to rebleed and need a second surgery. Or end up in the hospital for dehydration.

My parents had to stamp their feet and literally demand that I be referred to the ENT specialist, after our GP repeatedly stonewalled them about having my tonsils out. When I got to see the specialist, he took one look down my throat and asked "Why hasn't this child been sent to me before?" and when my parents explained, he shook his head and said "Tonsils and adenoids out, we'll get her booked in"
Now my son is having similar problems with his tonsils and every bout is being documented to get him a referral *sigh*.

I'm surprised your daughter is being stubborn about drinking, Amina, when I'd had mine removed all I wanted to do was have cool drinks.

Poor baby. Good luck keeping her hydrated. My sister had her tonsils out but it was pretty uneventful. She enjoyed being able to eat unlimited ice cream for a few days, especially since junk food was rare growing up.

Does she like ice lollies, frozen pops, anything like that? They have been my son's friend in the past when he has had a painful throat.

She loves ice pops but really just could not stomach anything. I had to call the doc yesterday and get a prescription called in for nausea medication. It worked.

Shes happy today! No vomiting, no pain and is able to eat. Thats all i wanted.

Thanks for all the well wishes guys. Shes almost @ 100%.

Yay for feeling better! I know my dad made almost hourly runs to the 7-11 for Icee's for me for almost a week because they were the only thing I could swallow and keep down when I got my tonsils out. I don't think I've voluntarily eaten one since, though.

I had both taken out in 2nd grade. All I wanted to eat was ice cream and jello.

Your poor daughter! I am glad she is okay now. You need to relax now and take some time for yourself since you went through a lot too.

I had my tonsils out at 7 years old. I supposedly snored like there was no tomorrow before I had them removed and slept quietly afterwards. I am told that now I only snore if I am really really really tired.

I remember the nurse yelling at me to eat the ice cream when I had my tonsils out or something from my food tray. I didn't like her so I didn't eat much.

Mr. Mis has never had anything removed as a child, which is why he had appendicitis at his age and I'm waiting for the tonsil thing to show up for him too.
