The petrol starts pumping the second we authorise it; so if a customer is pointing the nozzle up in the air, the petrol will go all over the place and we don't like spillages. Especially near a moronic individual.
And finally, we authorise the pumps for the very reason that a lot of people are stupid. We need to take a look first to see if the customer has the nozzle in the car and is not smoking/using a mobile phone/under 16. Yes, people are stupid enough to smoke while attempting to use the pumps. -.-
