The most fun I ever had at a casino:

I went in with ten dollars. I put one dollar into a slot machine and won seven dollars. I put three more dollars into the slot machine and won another seven dollars. Then I went over to the snack bar and had lunch. Then I left.

    Just call me Papa Moneybags.

I gamble in the stock market instead. At least with securities, generally your chances of coming out ahead go up over time.

      Generally.

I have never set foot in any of the casinos in my area (except to deliver pizza to the staff) to gamble.

I have, however, played the bigger national lottery games when the jackpot reaches say 200-300 million. I will buy $5 worth of random numbers for giggles and then promptly forget I bought them.
I'm lost without a paddle and headed up SH*T creek.

Attendant: Look, Buddy, I know damn well what will happen if I give you ten dollars. As soon as you have the money in your hand, you'll tell yourself you can go back to the casino and turn it into a hundred, and then in an hour from now, you'll be back here broke again.

DG: Well, you can't win if you don't play.
Hold up, so this guy flat out admits that the attendant is on the ball with his accusation and still expects him to loan him money?

Man that is a whole new level of either abject detachment from reality or denial fueled brazenness!

Okay, then, buddy, you've blown your whole wad, even the money you need to get home, and now you're here trying to bum money from me so that your wife doesn't find out. So, let me ask ya: Do you feel like a winner right now?

Most of the time, you won't win even if you DO play..."the house always wins".

Not only that, but the guy said he blew his "whole paycheck" on gambling...

I doubt he'd be skilled enough (especially considering his losses) to take $10 and turn it into whatever his paycheck was, plus the $10 to pay back the cashier.

To be honest, I'm seriously doubting the 'lost the whole paycheck' claim anyway. I think it's just someone scouting for a sucker. Even if his claim was true, and assuming he WAS that lucky/skilled, I have serious doubts he'd have returned to repay the cashier.

Well, I did just see this...

Of course, MSN DIDN'T publish thousands of "Woman turns 5 bucks into nothing by missing 15-leg NFL parlay" stories. It's a classic example of the adage:

"Dog bites man" is not news.

So incredibly true. It's not just the news agencies, either. The casinos use big-prize winners for promotion, but they never, ever tell you the amount of money they take in in contrast to what they pay out. Because then, the average Joe would have at least a clue as to his odds, and would probably steer clear of the 'money pits'.

In 2001, Lady Lineswine, Lineswine Jr & myself went to Las Vegas (a.k.a. Lost Wages).
Lady L gambled a WHOLE quarter - I went one further & blew Nothing, as in "didn't gamble a thing".
LS jr. wasn't old enough - he was five at the time - but this didn't stop him ALMOST grabbing the Wheel of (Mis)Fortune, as some poor punter was blowing his cash on it.
We grabbed him in time, much to LS Jrs, annoyance & a VERY relieved gambler.
We hurried through to the hotel, leaving the casino to relieve sucker of his hard-earned money.

I've only been to Pittsburgh's casino once. My dad and I were in there...simply to get warm, after freezing our nuts off during a Steelers game. I can't understand the appeal of sitting around in a smoke-filled room, throwing money away. But, I have a neighbor who goes to the casinos every weekend. It must be nice to be able to throw away that sort of cash

                            Tell me about it.

If they want to give money away like that, give it to ME and I'll use it for either bills and/or extra groceries for the house.

I may fill out an entry form for Pubisher's Clearing House when it comes in, but at most that only costs me the price of a stamp. Gambling away money is something I've never done and is definitely NOT on my bucket list.

When I was in the Air Force, the O club had some one armed bandits that ran on nickels or quarters.

Every so often, when I was there for a drink or to meet someone, I'd kill a little time by picking up $2.00 of nickels and play the slots.

I never expected to win, though I did manage once or twice (never big), it was just something to do that cost me less than many of the other options in town.

Nah, buying when the jackpot gets really big makes total sense. A, there'll be more news coverage and gossip about it than usual, so the non regular gamblers will be aware of it, and B, the only reason (imo) to buy a ticket is to daydream about what you'd do with a ridiculous amount of money.
