This was a story shared by one of our instructors. This happened to one of her classmates back when she was a physical therapist assistant student and it was time to take the state licensure exam.
The exam is taken in a nice, big testing center down in [big city]. Student (or "S", as he shall henceforth be known) left early and gave himself plenty of time, bringing his textbooks along so he could get there early and study prior to the exam.
About 2/3 of the way down, his car suddenly died on the interstate.
He managed to pull over. He called his girlfriend who was from [big city] and asked her to call everyone she knew in the area to see if he could get a ride. His girlfriend finally finds someone who can pick him up. However, the person has to take her kids with her and she doesn't want to stop on the interstate, so can S get off the interstate to meet her?
S grabs his books and starts jogging down the shoulder, and he soon realizes that there's no exit in sight. There's an embankment off to the side, so he decides to climb it.
At the top is a chain-link fence. S is desperate. He needs to get to the exam! So he tosses his books over and commits himself, because like hell he's going to lose those books, and he manages to scale the fence.
Once he's over and is able to orient himself, he calls for the ride, gets picked up, and when they get back on the interstate they hit a wall of traffic (and if you've guessed which [big city] this is and have ever driven through there, you know exactly what I'm talking about).
So S makes it to the testing facility with seconds to spare. He goes to check in and he's just covered in dirt and sweat. The check-in person explains that another minute, they wouldn't have been able to let him in. So he pleads for just five more minutes so he can clean up, and pity is taken on him and he is allowed to go wash up a bit in the restroom before taking the state exam.
Mid-way through he gets a break. And he's still shaken up. His figures his car was towed already and he isn't sure how he'll get it back and he needs some air, so he steps outside.
He's at a state licensure testing facility, after going through hell to get there, on break in the middle of the exam, and he stepped outside.
You may cringe now.
He is stopped on the way in and told he left the facility; he can't be let back in. He pleaded with the gal, who was the same one who initially checked him in. She decided that he was clearly having a very bad day and in her infinite mercy, allowed him back in to finish the test.
S later said his brain was so fried at that point, he was just filling in circles on a whim during the last half.
Somehow, through all that hell, he passed and got his license. *phew*

My instructor's purpose in sharing the story was that even in a disaster, people can still pass the test. The class reaction was all of us staring at her wide-eyed in horror that something so awful can happen. She actually ended up apologizing for freaking us out about the test.
