  • In which things (hopefully) reach their dramatic conclusion

Good morning, everyone. @_@ Today, I woke up in excruciating pain. Why? Because, yesterday at 9 AM, I went in for my second surgery in 6 months. Last week, I went to a wound care specialist who discovered that, just below the surface of this wound from my surgery in October, there was something there that was keeping it from healing. Naturally, the only way to fix it was a debridement (minor surgical procedure in which they went in and did a cleaning of the area around this wound).

So what did he find? A small piece of 28-year-old shunt tubing that was calcified to hell and back. Thankfully, now that it’s been removed, everything should heal the way it’s supposed to.

    So…how’s everyone else doing?

Ouch. Hope this takes care of things.

          Why was that there?

I hope you start feeling better soon.

            Why was that there?
Around this time last year, my old neurosurgeon deemed it too big of a hassle/not worth removing because of how badly calcified the tubing was. The removal process would have involved...pretty much exactly what ended up being done anyway- Creating a much bigger incision on my chest from which they would be able to safely and fully get it all outta there. Had I known then how much trouble it would eventually cause *not* to remove it, I would have insisted that it be done.

On the other hand, I've always been of the belief that things happen for a reason. So maybe something would have gone horribly wrong had I gotten it done last year.

              *flails, falls over*

There are few things that itch quite as powerfully as surgery scars. @_@ I hate it so. On the plus side, I had my first post-op follow up and the doctor said everything looked good. It's healing up like it should and is free of infection thanks to a rigorous and strict wound dressing change schedule.

Well... it needed to come out and was causing you issues. It's out now and you're healing well.

All in all a good thing.

I had my most-recent/very last ever followup appointment with the wound care clinic yesterday. The doctor took one look at my scars, was super impressed because they are completely healed up, and he said I no longer need to come in unless something goes horribly wrong over the next few months.
