One time, a customer called up looking for a book. It showed we had it in stock, but I couldn't find it, so I offered to call the gentleman back if I found it. He agreed. Because I have a Dr. House-like obsession with finding stuff, I eventually found it, called him up, and went with the usual book-holding drill. Well, I was working a short shift that day, so I was preparing to go home, when I was paged to the register counter. I went over, and one of the cashiers pointed out a short, older man to me and said,
"He just wanted to thank you."
It was the customer I had helped on the phone! He not only thanked me personally, he had even written a "thank-you" note just in case he had missed me! I was so touched, I kept the note for weeks and weeks. In a world full of ungrateful entitlement whores, it's nice when someone shows a bit of real gratitude for your service.
