For example, if a particular thread has 5 pages of posts, I can't seem to be able to get to page 5. Page 4 will just keep loading when I try to get to the last page.

Short version is that we allow people to delete their own posts. It doesn't actually remove them - it's called a soft delete. Mods can see them. It's a clash between the count you see and the way it decides how many pages to view.
For example, you get a thread with eleven posts, which takes it onto two pages. Someone deletes their post, which happens to be the second post on the first page. Members can only see the posts allowed by the system, which means that you see a page of ten posts, but the system knows there's eleven. It's a mismatch between counting the number of posts and the threads you see. Perfectly harmless.
