Default Turn the music down!

On Sunday, we open at 11 AM. The phone rang at about 8 that day and I picked it up just in case it was an associate calling in for their schedule or something.

I get an earful of blasting music. It startles me. I trip over my lines and manage to just say, "Hello. Can I help you?"

A few seconds of loud music continues and then I hear "hello? Hellooo?" Then, the following convo occurs. It's hard to hear anything most of the time...and I had to ask him to repeat himself several times. You would think he'd get a clue...

Me: Yes, do you need help with something?
SC: Yeah, I want to buy a 10x13 storage building that was on sale yesterday.
Me: Well, we open at 11--
SC: Just help me out! Can you go see if it's still on sale?
Me: It's not.
SC: How do you know? You didn't even check!
Me: I set the sale. The 10x13 went off sale today.
SC: (Says something but I can't understand him because of the music)
Me: What was that?
SC: (sounding angry) Can you go see if you have any left?
Me: No, I can't, because the lights in the stockroom are out right now.
SC: Well, why? Can't you get a flashlight?
Me: Sir, we don't open until 11. Please call back then.
SC: Wait--
Me: Have a good day. *click*

I would have been more civil with him if he had turned down that stupid music. If you are going to call someone--especially a business--keep the background noise down! This guy was incrediably annoying. The phone rang nonstop for the next ten minutes, but I didn't pick it up. This guy just pissed me off.

note: the lights in the stockroom where the storage building kits are kept at low lighting during nonstore hours. I don't go in there unless I absolutely have to.

I hate the customers who expect you to only pay attention to them but don't deal with you in the same way. In general this is refering to cell phone customers. Yes, the special assholes who think that obnoxious and loud ring tone will make me want to go out of my way to help you.

I completely agree. If you want me to do something special for you, at the very least, say please and treat me with respect.

Whenever checking out people who were on their cell phones I used to not say anything and wait for them to acknowledge what I was doing before doing anything during the transaction. I've since given up on that, and I've decided that I'm not going to be nice to those on their phones. I know it's awful, but it makes things faster when I just take care of things instead of waiting around for people. Plus, it gives me so much satisfaction to be obnoxious to people like that (I always make sure to make pages, fix my loud plastic bags, etc.). I know it's ass-holey of me, but you get what you give.

Kind of on topic:

I'm like that with people on the phone, but my pet peeve is when THEY ring YOU and then start a conversation with someone else while they're on the phone with you. My mother does this all the time. She lives with my grandma (her mother) and the old dear has a bit of dementia going on.

It's almost like as soon my mum is on the phone, she HAS to interrupt and talk about something lame and unnecessary.

I'm always complaining to my mum about that, but she dismisses it as something she has no control over. I got so ropeable one day, I abruptly said to her, "call me when your conversation is over" and hung up.

Exactly! I used to find people who would act like a jerk, & then expect the staff to do favors for them very annoying.

Loud music bugs me no end - but what I hate worse is when they are eating thru the entire conversation. Ewwww. The "I only have time to call on my lunch break" doesn't impress me - if you only have a 5 min lunch break then you have bigger problems than trying to organize a family trip on said break.

One of my favorite pet peeves. I just get so annoyed with customers that call you with a blasting loud as hell TV or radio, and you say to them several times, "I'm sorry, but I'm having a hard time hearing you". You would think that would give them the hint to turn the volume down, but many just continue talking, trying to get you to hear them. I sometimes have actually said, "Sir, would you mind turning down your radio a little? I'm having a terrible time hearing you."

Sometimes I wish I could tell them to turn down the crowd in the background, but that's impossible. You actually have customers who call in about a bill, or their service, while at a noisy restaurant, or public place.

Ugh, I hate those, too. Many of them like to eat their Doritos while talking to you, and it's always your fault that they have to call on their lunch break.

I would ring up the transaction, tell them their total and wait. If they didn't hear me I'd just stand there. If they paid without saying anything to me I'd finish it up and hand them their bags without a word. If you can't be bothered to speak to me, I won't speak to you beyond telling you what you owe me.
