  • Did I master my bagging position?

I work at a well known supermarket, and wanted to move up. But after being there almost 1 and a half years, they won't do it because I "Didn't master my bagging position?" Whats up with that?
Whasup everybody, its chris in the house!

        ~Note, nothing on Chris~

I would've thought that if a person can't master bagging after a year and a half, they should've been long gone.

Sounds like they're giving excuses, and bad ones at that.

Sounds like they're short on baggers (or don't want to pay you more) and want to keep you where you are. That sucks.

I would talk to a manager or your union representative (if you're in a union, that is). Unless you're under the age limit, you should've been moved up already.

Where I work, I started as a bagger and got into a checker class after 6 months. The 3 tests that were required for passing checker class were (1) the produce test, (2) the speed test, and (3) the accuracy test. There were 5 employees including me in the checker class. Only 3 of us passed since one employee failed the produce test and another employee dropped out because she didn't think she could handle running the register. I started training at the service desk after checking for only 5 months and started training in photo about a month after that (photo lab got taken down last year). A little more than a year later, I also started getting trained on scan.

Did you ask them what it was about your bagging that wasn't masterful?

I don't understand it, either. If you apparently can't figure out how to bag groceries, there's still many options in the store for you.

                Management, for example...

"Master of the baggers" and ask them if that helps any?

Don't take it personally. Sounds like the person making the decision is just looking for any excuse to avoid giving you the position, maybe because he/she had already decided who to give the job to ahead of time.

Kinda like me applying for that specialist job at work. They gave the job to somebody who had been there for years and is a big suck-up, and just interviewed a couple other people to make it look like they considered every applicant. Then when he turned it down, they gave it to somebody else who had also been there a long time, but is generally a very good worker. So that leaves me stuck either unloading trucks or working on the third-shift stock crew, with no guarantee of full time.

                          Master Bagger is funnier.

                          At least in my opinon.

Funnier still would be if he worked in a bait shop.

Maybe ask them what, specifically, they think you haven't mastered and what they want you to do to improve your performance. That way, if there really are things they aren't happy with, you'll know. And, if they hem and haw and can't come up with anything, you'll know it's complete BS. And they might even have to give you the promotion (or at least come up with a new lame excuse). I'm sorry, though...that sucks.
