Default Nearly lost $500 worth of checks.

About a week ago, I was counting down my drawer and got distracted by a customer and had to turn around for 2 seconds.

After I helped them I went back to counting when all of a sudden I noticed that the stack of checks I had sitting on top of the drawer were missing.

I went nuts... I KNEW that a customer couldn't have grabbed them, because even though my back was turned, it was only for a second, I was still standing RIGHT in front of the register, and in order to reach it they would have had to climb half-way up on the counter (It's a pretty big counter, and the register is set off to the side of where the customers stand.)

So ther I am, wondering what happened to them. I'm looking everywhere, but I can't find them. My manager asked me what was wrong, and I told him... but it took him a minute to realize that I really couldn't find em, and was actually pretty worried about it.

Turns out, when I was helping the customer I didn't leave the drawer all the way open like I thought, I closed it about half-way, and the checks got snagged on the top part of the drawer and had fallen BEHIND it. (Inside the opening where the drawer sits, but behind the actual moving parts.

I had to reach back through an opening about [----------] that wide, and fish all the checks back out (there was 4 or 5 of em). Scrapped my hand up pretty good too. There's quite a few pointy metal things back there.
My manager thought it was funny... jackass

We know this well at my store, thanks to the way our counter is designed, their are many tiny little gaps which credit card reciepts (for signature verification, we get nagged at if they go missing), or bills can go..
We've just money, only to see it a few days later hiding in a crevace.. same deal with the credit card notes. Its REAL FUN stuffing around moving very heavy shop fitting to get them...

Yes, just a reminder for those of us that run a cash register, if your money or checks don't balance, and you've done a recount, and looked in the immediate area for stray bills/checks, DON'T PANIC! Look in the area where the till drawer slides in and out. Then, if you still don't find it, panic!
