Default A computer and internet aren't optional to use that service.

I get a call from a bank about online banking. Seriously, I have no idea who was more stupid, the bank rep or the customer.

SB- Sucky bank rep
SC-Sucky customer
Me- Needs no introduction
Italics- thoughts

Me: *Spiel*
SB: Yeah, I have a customer who's wondering how to sign up for online banking.
Me: Sure, are they having problems signing up?
SB: No, they want to sign up but don't know how.
Me: Ok. You seriously have no idea how to walk someone through it? You SHOULD!
Me: Have you had them go online?
SB: No they haven't been online yet.
Me: Ok, we'll they'll need to get onto their computer and bring up *website*
SB: Well, she doesn't have a computer.
Me: Um, ok. All the enrollment is done online and if she doesn't have an internet connection, let alone a computer, I don't know how she's going to enroll. or why the hell she's enrolling since she won't really be able to use it. Yeah she can go to the library, but the last place I want to be while looking at financial information is somewhere in public.

I have no idea who was the bigger idiot. The bank clerk who had no idea how to tell someone the URL of a website and then tell them to click the ONLINE BANKING button on the FRONT PAGE and follow instructions...

Or the customer who wants OLB, but has no internet or computer.

And these people have breed.

I suppose one could do online banking at work, if you have your own workstation computer... though, even then I'd be nervous about using it. AND... I don't get the whole "I want to use online banking but I'm not at a computer" thing. I can understand "I don't have one" but not BEING at one too? On. Line. In-ter-net. Durrh.

Good to know things are status quo then.

I would say the customer is the slightly bigger idiot.

This reminds me of a post long ago where some lady called tech support wanting to get her internet to work. But only had the modem. No computer. Seriously, how did you think you were going to interact with this box with a light or two on it?

I remember when I started working at the library in 1999, there was a service where you can look in our catalog from home without having internet. You dial a number and your phone communicated with our computers...or something like that. But yeah, the modem but no computer...did this person even asked the sales person at Best Buy or where ever what he needed for the internet? Did the sales person not ask some questions, like "do you have a computer in the first place?"

At back to school night last night, the school had the computer lab set up, and was pushing people, to sign up for Schoolloop and eScrip. Oh, right, I'm going to enter all my personal information and credit and debit cards into a computer, with who knows what security, with about fifty other people milling around behind me. Don't think so.
