  • Oh yea, this is WIC

many of you know, but for those who don't, when you have WIC, you put in the dates that it's valid, then you put the current date on the WIC warrant, then you scan the items

what's with the idiots that put their food on the belt, then after I start scanning the items, start digging and say "oh yea, this is WIC"? one time I got 6-7 items into the transaction before they mentioned it was WIC. when you do that, I have to void everything off, and start over, why can't they be like a normal person and put the WIC warrant and their ID on top of the WIC items?

    Ugh.....WIC.....

WIC was always a major pain in the ass at the store I worked at. 9 out of 10 WIC transactions needed a supervisor (seriously) because there would always be a problem, mainly people not buying the items specified on the WIC check (wrong brand, wrong quantity, etc).

And don't get me started on the people on buying milk, cheese, and cereal on WIC, then also paying cash for fresh steamed lobsters.

at my store every WIC needs a supervisor's initials. thing is, they don't check anything, just make sure I checked ID.

if they're asshats we can get their WIC revoked, so I kinda like it, never had any real suck stemming from WIC, but if there ever is I can do several things to get them back without getting in trouble, just by following the policies more strictly

I despised WIC when I worked for Big Yank. Never mind waiting until halfway through the transaction to pull out the damned checks, I get people who'd use expired ones and yell at me because I can't use them. Or they wouldn't have their card and I can't verify signatures or anything for the sake of legality.

I'd also get the geniuses who never quite understood why Fruity Pebbles wasn't WIC-safe.

I used WIC several years ago ( I needed it, believe me!!). If i wasnt able to first tell the cashier that it was a WIC purchase, then I would sit the checks on or in front of the items I was buying...in easy reach and where it wouldnt roll under the belt. I always put all the items in the order that they were in on the check..arent I great?

But one time, I was SC and didnt realize til I got home. I got the juicy juice and for some damn reason it just wouldnt scan..and the cashiers telling me that it may not be the right flavor (it was Grape) and Im arguing..."They show it on the poster, how can it not be the right flavor?!?" in my SC self righteousness.

We're going back and forth for a little while, shes still trying to scan the damn thing, and finally someone comes out and overrides it. I go gome with the juice. Im still trying to figure out why it wouldnt scan....and its the wrong damn size!!!!!!!I ended up with the one big ones, and on WIC you can only get the smaller juice in the plastic container (its measured by ounces). I felt like such an ass...but i did enjoy my juice. ( I never did that again BTW, I always triple checked Oz's from then on.)

From the was they have the commercials most everyone can get on it to make sure that children have proper nutrition. And when used for that purpose it is a wonderful thing.

Oh god I hate WIC. Totally made of evil! I mean sure I've gotten pretty quick with it (as long as they get the right stuff). Still I hate it. Thankfully it will soon (this december I am told) be moved to a card system. That's right WIC will be moved to a swipable card similar to Foodstamp EBTs. Only one transaction not separate ones. No entering in expiration info, no signing, but the computer is still suppose to tell us something is WIC or not. So I'm ready for that, especially since that'll help those of us in accounting. A whole other step gone. I can't wait!

A friend of mine broke his arm in a motorcycle wreck. He was out of work for 3 months because of it. So his wife applied for WIC. She couldn't understand the sheer volume of food they were supplying her with. 4 or 5 gallons of milk a week. For two adults, a 4 year old, and a baby. Then a couple hundred dollars of other stuff along with it. She took full advantage of it and stocked her pantry with all sorts of canned foods. The freezer was pretty full too.

Let's leave off with "WIC is evil" "People abuse WIC" etc please. That never goes well, and we have more than a few members who were/are on that or similar. The original point was people forgetting to mention that it was a WIC transaction. If there's any more off-topic, I'll close the thread for simplicity's sake.

I was on WIC when my daughter was a baby - not sure if this was just how the program was in this area at the time, or if it was just my particular circumstances, but the only useful thing they really covered was baby formula......I remember having trouble buying milk because the size which the WIC check said I had to get wasn't a size that the store carried.

baby formula's what makes it worth the time, that's just about the only thing that takes them over $15. My parents got WIC when I was the age to apply, and I've had neighbors ask "you guys want some milk? It was WIC, so I got it, but we don't need it"

seriously, who needs 4 gallons of milk?

Not exactly. I'm pregnant, and I tried applying for food stamps and WIC. I was literally laughed at.

Now, I make kind of decent money, enough to get by with spending money when it was just me, but as a soon to be single mother I was hoping to have a little support for the basics to make sure that my baby had the other necessities that it needs, like a roof over it's head and clothes.

It's not like I'm a doctor or lawyer or business executive or something. I'm an assistant manager at a drug store.

i am one of the few people who doesnt think wic is evil
I am the daughter of a bastard, but a helpful bastard.
My dad is the person who winds up helping women at checkout one slow days when we grab some stuff. once we got behind a woman who had to do about 7 different wic purchases and one cash (the cash purchase was like 6 bucks and was just a small "be good" toy and some cookies) and she told my dad who was helping keep her tired about to be cranky boy entertained and help her load up her cart because sh also had a 3 month old that she had to carry that she was so glad for wic because she and her children where lactose intolerant and so was a few other children at the wbattered women shelter she worked with, which was way she had such alarge order. She was buying 25 cartons of lactose free milk.
i think people wo say its evil should realise not all people abuse it.

Mom had WIC the whole time she was preggers with EQ and I. She only used it for about a month or so (after we were born). She and Dad were self sufficient so she couldn't understand why she was given so much (she had a garden and Dad's carpentry was in the prime at the time, so they certainly never went hungry).

When I get in line I try to make sure the people in front of me don't have something like 1 gal. of milk and 1/2 gal. of milk, and blocks of cheese and beans. I know it takes a long time for the cashier to fill out the forms.
But I got in this short line one day and wasn't paying attention. The woman had WIC and the cashier either told her she had to get a 1/2 gal, or that she still could get 1/2 on her card. So the woman shuffles (argh) to the back of the store to get the milk. And the rest of us are waiting for her to get back, which takes a long time.
I wish people would pay attention to what they can get so not to hold up the line when they have to go back and get the right thing.
