  • $15 tip?!?

Backstory.. I deliver pizza. Enough backstory.

Tonight I took a delivery to an apartment complex that's quite literally less than a block away. Another driver saw the address when my ticket printed out, he assured me I could get a $5-7 tip. Of course, that had me going "awesome". The order was $24 and change (basically, $25).

It'd been 13 minutes since he'd placed the order when I left with it - and it took all of 3 minutes to get to my car, drive there, park, get out, and walk to his door.

He opens it - first thing I notice is the cloud of marijuana smoke drifting out, second is his red eyes. I'm already thinking "oh awesome, stoners always tip good, A. was right!". I ask him how his night's going, he replies "excellent!", and I said something along the lines of "smells like it!" and grinned. He laughs, hands me 2 folded bills and says keep the change, tells me to have a good night and closes the door. I unfold them expecting a $10 and a $20.

It was 2 $20s. I'm going "wtf?" at that point, I was expecting a $5 tip from what the other driver told me... not $15.

I knock on the door again, he answers, I say "Hey I know you said keep the change, but... you know you gave me $40 right?". He grins and says "Yeah I know, $15 tip - you're cool man, and you got here fast. Keep it!" I'm guessing it had a bit to do with my comment about the smell and a bit to do with my appearance (I look like a stereotypical stoner, long hair, etc), and how fast it got there.

Stoners usually tend to tip pretty good, at least in my delivery area. But damn, $15?!

His address is now burned into my eyes forever - at least, he'll always get his order damn quick when I'm around.

edit: I should add - when I got back to the store the other driver asked me "So did you get $5 from him?".

My deadpan response was "No, $15 and a contact high."

He laughed at the bit about the contact high, but was kinda pissed that he didn't get that $15 tip (he'd just gotten $0.00 on his last delivery).

OK, now I know who to ask: is about $5 usually a reasonable tip for food delivery? (I do go up in bad weather, traffic messes, holidays, and similar less-than-favorable conditions.)

My boyfriend is a delivery driver and he considers $5 to be generous...even when its 10% of the bill. But then again, it depends on the area he delivers to, the attitude of the customers, and conditions of the delivery.

Yes, $5 is a very good tip up until you hit anything over $50 for the amount of the order (before tip). From that point, the normal "10%-20%" rule you'd apply toward waitstaff is generally expected.

The past few days have had some surprises:

$30 tip on an order - 11 pizzas, 12 2 liters, my back HATED me after I carried all those drinks at once (still aching a bit). $150 order though, and I made damn sure we got it there fast.

$10 tip on a $20 order tonight - 2 pizzas that came out to $20.02 after tax and delivery, he handed me a $20 and $10 and said to keep it. It was to a party, they asked me in to do a kegstand and smoke some.. uh... stuff.. with them. I don't think my boss would have appreciated me stumbling back in reeking of beer and/or weed, so I had to decline. I asked him if he was sure he wanted to give me $30, he said "Hey we all work for tips here" (college age crowd in there, so...).

$8 tip on a $22 order last week - to a waiter from an upscale restaurant nearby.

Too bad the rest of my tips usually suck - I actually got a friggin 2 cent tip last night.

You should have given the person your thoughts on that.

I love that. $5 is usually a pretty reasonable tip, but I think it also depends on the price of the pizza as well as how prompt the driver was in getting it to you.

$15? Wow! This guy must be rich. Probably is if he's able to afford to dope himself up like that. Maybe he also deals in the selling of it, perhaps even has a greenhouse in his backyard with it.

I don't know what people consider bad tips...but I generally follow a trend of about 20-30% on my tips, unless the person was an asshole

Anytime we get food delivered I tip $5 and always get our food fast and hot. So, I guess it's a good tip.

I normally tip either $5 or if the service is exceptionally good, $10.
When at restaurants, I normally tip 20-25% (unless the service is bad, obviously).

I like giving large tips. I know drivers get some deliveries where they get no tip, so I like to compensate for that. And I know waiters make minimum wage or even less without tips, so I like to counter that.

I wish Pizza Hut would deliver to my area. For some reason our local PH closed down about 2 years ago and my house is in sort of a "dead zone" for delivery. No other local PH will deliver to us. Bummer. I like Pizza Hut and I usually tip about 25% of the order.

You know, all this talk about tipping makes me think about the tips we get at the casino. Dealers in a casino work for tips, we get minimum wage or maybe a dollar or two more than from the casino, the rest of our paycheck comes from players tipping.

Every morning, we empty out the tip boxes and count how much is in them, and count it out. We add it up, and then divide by the total number of dealer hours for that pay period, and get that amount on our check hourly.

Our average amount we take in every 2 weeks in tips: $600,000.

Our single biggest tipper ever still blows me away. Guy was doing extremely well on a high-limit table, and was tipping his dealer liberally. Finally he left just after shift change.

Total amount he had tipped his dealer: $220,000.

Casino life. Nothing else like it.
                            Dealer hits... 21. Table loses.

This happens more often than most people want to believe.
