Kitten in the road

Please don't read if you are sensitive to possible animal death. Please, it's really quite depressing!











I went to another city today for work and I was on a very long bridge--7.5 miles to be exact.

Halfway through, I saw something funny in the middle of the roadway. It was a small black kitten, still alive. I don't think it had been hit. It was hunched down, but looking around, and was looking very, very scared.

I swear to god, if I was anywhere but that narrow interstate bridge, I would have pulled over right then and there and saved the kitten.

I know that probably no one else stopped. There's no way that kitten is still alive.

How the hell did it get three or four miles onto the bridge without being hit? I don't understand it.

I was in tears having to drive away from the cat.

I'm just sick thinking about having to go that same route tomorrow.

How did it get there? I don't understand! I'm really upset about it. I've been upset all day.

I tell you the same thing a Sheriff's deputy told me when I hit a golden German Shepard:

"Don't beat yourself up about it."

Seriously, cats are natural born survivors. I know it was adorable and you want to hold it and keep it from harm, but you can't do that for ever kitten out there. Given enough time, that kitten will be smart enough never to go out on a bridge again. Or, who knows? Animal Control finds it, takes it to the Humane Society or shelter and some child will take him/her home. Think positively. Otherwise, if you keep going long enough, you won't make it through the day.

How did it get there? I don't understand!

Probably got dumped there by someone who got it for a pet then realised that you have to actually care for pets. Those kind of people need a good beating.

He could have made it, you never know. My brother once found a tiny black kitten in the middle of 4th of July fireworks traffic, in the dark...I have no idea how he even saw it. He brought it home and we took care of it for a week or so until he found someone at work to take it.

It always makes my stomach drop a bit when I see kitties that have been hit by cars. Bothers me more than any other animal I see on the road

The most likely reason the kitten was on the bridge was it got under the hood of a car for warmth. The person starts up the car and goes to work. At some point, the kitten, confused why it's moving, falls out of the car.

I've seen that once, where a kitten falls out from under a car. There is this semi-feral cat that is on my property. Once she had a litter, with a white kitten and an orange kitten. I was driving the car and I felt a bump. I look behind me and see the white kitten on the road, alive.

I'm sorry about how you feel. I love kittens and cats. I've seen a lot of sad things with dogs, puppies, cats, kittens, chickens, baby bunnies, birds (besides chickens :P). I think it hardened me a lot. I cry about but I think I could go crazy about animals I couldn't save or get hard-hearted. It's good to feel bad about the kitten, it shows you are still compassionate.

Yeah. Console yourself with the knowledge that it's very possible the little dude made it. It's only got to get to the edge and it's pretty safe, really. It probably dashed there after you went past, scaring it half to death.

I saw a kitty get run over one day (no seriously, keep reading). It tumbled end over end under the car, rolled a few times as the car drove on, then raced up a driveway on the other side of the road. The car did turn around to go look for it. But hey - the kitty handled a full on rollover rumble and could still run away pretty easily.

They're tough little mites. It's only the tires they need to watch out for. Think about the little dude making it. Getting to the edge then walking all the way one way or another out and off the bridge!
