Cashier said it first!

Not a sucky customer, but couldn't find a better place to put it...
I was checking out at the grocery store yesterday when my sixer of hoppy deliciousness wouldn't scan. The cashier, a very young guy, tried a couple more times, looked at me and smiled, and said "I guess it's free."
I laughed and said "I know you hear that all the time and I wouldn't dream of saying it to you."
He smiled again and said "I DO hear it a lot."

He was probably saying it before you had a chance to. You know, just to get it over with because he was anticipating it.

You should have handled it more like that.
