The Straw that Broke MY Back...
As you likely know, I work at Toxic Hell and deal with a ton of shitty customers in a day as well as bitchy coworkers and spineless managers. Despite all that, I liked my job because it kept me active and there are some regulars and some coworkers I like. Every so often, our lovely District Manager would come throw a bit of chaos into our already hectic jobs and nit pick our every move but we would always either tough it out until she left or all refuse to comply to whatever stupid rule she erected until it blew over and things went back to normal.
And no, I don't mean rules that are put in place to make for a safer workplace or anything like that. I mean stuff like giving each customer this 2 minute spiel about "take this survey and tell us how we did yadayadayada and you could win $1,000! You must be over 18 to Say and Play and enteries are limited to one a month. I wish you good luck" when it's FAST food and those customers don't give a rat's ass about surveys. They want their food...NOW. We either shove it in the bag or hand it over with the reciept. Quick and painless. DM wants us to drag it out into this long and painful transaction in hope that, after all that, they will leave inspired to take 5 minutes to call and say how good we are at slapping ingrediants into a burrito flour.
She also visits occasionally to move stuff around and nit pick. For example, she moved out heated cabinet from where it was conveniently seated next to the line where we could grab food quickly, to this crowded corner on the other side of the store forcing us to burn our fingers carrying hot pans 20 feet to the line. After a few of us got together and complained to management, DM bought us some oven mitts which she hung on the cabinet so we could use those to save our hands. Problem solved, yes? No! She took then away during her next visit saying they were "unsanitary". THEN WHY DIDN'T YOU THINK OF THAT BEFORE YOU BOUGHT THEM!!!!! Now, she bitches when we use our aprons or paper towels to carry stuff. DEAL WITH IT!
Little things over the years built up but I stayed because I did like the job despite all that but the DM's last visit is what did it. She:
-took away one of our dish racks forcing us to squeeze them onto one rack
-took away our 2 lid racks and replaced them with one new rack that is on such an angle, it dumps the lids on your head if you put too many up there which happens like...always because we have a ton of lids
-moved our sauce bottle basket up so high, only the tallest men can reach it
-took away one of the shelves we put our big containers on making us squeeze them on the lower shelves
-made a new rule that we must ask every customer for their name
-scolded me for telling a customer I was tired because I'm always supossed to say I'm super fantabulous may I kiss your ass sir?
-scolded me for not wearing that Taco Bell belt THAT I NEVER GOT! Seriously, we go through this every visit.
DM: Kisa, you need to wear your belt every day you work!
Me: I don't have a belt.
DM: Where is it?
Me: I never got one. Nobody ever gave me a belt.
DM: Ok, well you need one.
Me: Get me a belt and I will wear it.
DM: Ok next time for sure!
--next time--
DM: Kisa, where's your belt?
That last visit did it. Now, I cant stand the thought of going into work everyday. It makes me physically ill. I'm sick of the customers, I'm sick of the managers, I'm sick of the DM, I'm sick of corporate, I'm sick sick sick of it all. I'm applying to other places and praying for a callback because I can't wait to go into work and tell my boss I quit. I feel a little bad because they do really depend on me there as no one else really gives a fuck about work. I'm the only one that cares enough to show up on time and give 110% but I just can't do this anymore...

I would suggest actually pointing out that "last time you visited you said you would get me a belt/hat"

Wow.
I have to wonder is DM really is that stupid or is she purposely trying to make things difficult.

I'm thinking she is trying to justify the existence of her job.

Oh, god, save us from management who think they have to make changes to be seen as doing their jobs! I had one like that once. The changes he made actually took us from leaving work at 1-2 AM to leaving at 7:30 AM when the day shift came in. I made some good money for college that year, but almost all the workers with kids quit, and we couldn't keep new workers once they found out about the 14-hour nights.

This is rhetorical right?
ETA: I know what you mean. I'm truly hating my job too. Sorry you have so much bullshit to deal with.

Kisa, I'm surprised you've been able to stick it out this long...big kudos to you for doing so. But everyone has their limits and it's horrible to have to work under those conditions. I do hope you find something better soon. ***hugs***

Ditto. Nothing she's done is a major issue; it's all, as you say, little nitpicking things that didn't need to be done and have made things worse, not better. But now she can go back and say, "I did blah and blah and blah and blah and ...."
Kisa, don't feel bad about your departure. You need to get out of there and the fact that you do is management's doing. Whenever I felt bad about leaving a job I'd remind myself the place will still be there long after I'm gathered to my celestial reward and it's not my responsibility to prop it up until then.
If they lose enough capable workers, one of two things will happen: they'll either get some management in who will fix things, or they'll just continue to deteriorate until the roof falls in. Either way, it's not your responsibility. You stuck it out longer than most people would have.
I'm crossing my fingers that you find a better job quickly!
