Default Hit By a Rogue Tire

So today after work DH and the kids came to pick me up. We're driving along and suddenly see this car cut completely across the highway, then see a large tire from a flatbed trailer come flying towards our car. It hit the driver's side, hit the median, bounced and then hit the side of the car.

Luckily no one was hurt and the damage to the car doesn't appear to be too bad, it's mainly on the driver's side bumper and fender. We called the police to file a report, and exchanged info with the driver.

Then when the cop showed up he ran DH's license, and it is showing up as being suspended. Back in August DH was pulled over and told he had a warrant out for 2 unpaid traffic tickets, so he just reissued the tickets and said DH would have a mandatory court appearance.

So DH went to court, apologized to the judge for forgetting about the tickets, then he explained that we had just moved and that in all that chaos we must have just forgotten about them. The judge was sympathetic, and waived one of the tickets, and after court DH went to pay the ticket.

The clerk at the register still tried to charge him for both tickets. DH explained what the judge said, and the clerk only charged him for one ticket, which he paid and we thought was the end of it, but I guess not because DH hasn't been pulled over since that incident. So our best guess is that their system didn't get updated to reflect that one of the tickets was waived, so it's now showing up as unpaid, and that's why his license is suspended. So we have to call the city up on Monday to find out what's going on, and how to get this mess straightened out, then we have to call the truck driver's insurance company and deal with that mess too. Ugh!

Back in August/September, there was a flyaway hubcab that came within inches of hitting my car. Thankfully, it stopped over an embankment.

A tire would be much worse. So sorry this happened to you.

This story reminds me of an incident that happened at my job. I was the shift manager on duty when one of my crew came up and told me that the drive thru had substained some damage. I went outside and found a tire in the drive lane. What happened? A truck was driving down the main road in front of our store and his tire came off, it bounced on the curb and flew up to the valiance over our drive window and smashed a huge hole in it and then narrowly missed a suburban sitting at the window. Pretty freaky! The driver of the suburban happened to be an off duty police officer too! We found out later that the guy just got new tires at TMA so obviously they were not tightened very well!

That really sucks. It seems like that sort of thing happens a lot with the different DOTs, precincts, towns, etc. You pay a ticket one place, but it never gets sent to the state computer as having been paid, so it appears you're still delinquent and boom, stupid warrant. And you'll never know it - supposedly they're supposed to send you letters, but I've never heard of anyone actually getting one!
