Question Wal Mart Gives Out Handicap Permits!?

I pulled into an isle of cars and was checking the handicap spaces on either side of me. I walked-up to a car with no handicap tags or permit. I was getting my ticket book out of the security vehicle when 2-young males and a young female started getting into the car. I asked them "Hey, do you have a handicap card to park here?"
One of the males said "No, we just turned it in."
I was confused and thought he misheard me and thought I said 'handicap (shopping) CART.' So I pointed at another car's permit and said "No, I meant a hanging handicap permit, a card, like that."
He said "We just returned it to the store."
I asked "What do you mean?"

He then proceeds to tell me that Wal Mart GIVES YOU a temporary tag to hang-up if you want to park in in a handicap space if you're only going to be in there for a few minutes.

OH COMEON GIVE ME A SOMEWHAT BELIEVABLE EXCUSE YOU STUPID ASSWIPE!!

I sternly told him that there is no such thing and not to park in a handicap space again unless someone is handicapped! Unfortunately, because they were already in the car it was too late to ticket it, and I had to move the security car to let them out of the spot; not allowed to trap them to finish writing a ticket.

How dumb do I look, huh?

Holy shit. I would start double checking even if you see a hanging tag, the persons name and sig are supposed to be on it in CT, you will have to check with your own state. I *think* if the personal info is not filled in on the hangtag you can call the cops and have it checked.

[the procedure in CT if you forget to hang your tag is to show up in court with the letter that comes with the hangtag and you apologize profusely for forgetting to hang the tag and they generally forgive the ticket.YMMV]

Those people are truly idiots, and apparently think you are one of them.

We get people sometimes asking us for permits...due to the awkward way our parking is laid out, our handicap spots are not by the handicap rooms, they're in front of regular rooms, and people want to park in front of their rooms, and expect us to tell them it's okay. Yeah, it's a state disabled parking permit; you need to go talk to them about it!

Same procedure here in WA.

I don't think my temporary tag had to have my signature on it, but I could just be forgetting about that.

That tag also never left my possession and I was like a rabid honey badger when it came to remembering to put it up. I had seen enough stupid people taking handicap spots when they shouldn't have been...

Normally, with a Handicap tag, or plates even, you need to have a Doctor's write off on it. Either on a state BMV form, or have then write out a script for it (depending on the state) The only exception in my state (Ohio) is you can get handicap plates for a vehicle, if the vehicle has been modified.

That's the case in Illinois. My wife renewed hers last year. Her neurologist has to sign off on the forms.

Here, the cards have just a number and expiration date. I can't call the police to check every card I find, nor do I have the authority to match up cards and ID, so I can only ticket expired, missing, and cards with the date covered/broken off. I've seen the NJ ones never expire, another state hand-writes the date and number, another state has hole punches, Puerto Rico has white permits with the person's photo on them, and I think WV has the person's name and DOB on it. Ticketing isn't meant to be my primary job, so I only ticket the ones I know for sure.

Some have argued that the expired date on the card was actually date it was issued . Others argue that how were they supposed to know the card was expired? Most just figure it's a mall parking lot, they're not on the street, so they'll be safe

I've pushed carts at WM for 4 years, have seen all kinds of morons parking in the handicapped spaces without having the required signs, and even people who park in the yellow-lined area NEXT to the handicapped spaces because they're mad that there's no other spaces that they don't want to spend another minute looking for, but Walmart actually HANDING out handicapped permits to anyone? Ha ha! I don't freaking think so! Because if the store was to actually do something that stupid, I'd be the employee my bosses would be giving me the permits to in order to pass them out.

And the Government would strongly disapprove.
