Burnin' mah meatloaf!
I'm in Chicago for the week taking a class on theatrical wigs at DePaul. While here, I'm staying at a hostel nearby. This hostel has a kitchen for the guests to use while here so they can cook for themselves should they want to. Tonight was the first night I endeavored to make my own dinner since previous nights this week had me enjoying many of the tasty treats around town.
I bought little meatloaf tarts from a cute place up the street that need to be taken home and reheated. I opted for the oven since that will keep the crusts flaky. So I waited in the kitchen while the oven preheated and felt like I was really in the way since people were moving about and making their dinners. Once 250 was achieved I slid my tray into the oven, noted the time and stepped just outside the door to where I could see the oven, but I wasn't in the way. Then I started to browse the forums here.
After 10 minutes I got up and went to check on my tarts. Well, I noticed that someone had turned it up to 425 and there were two calzones in there as well now!
Not long after I opened the door (about 15 seconds actually) a girl ran up and said "Oh, we put that in there because we didn't know anyone had their stuff in there." I looked at her and then pointedly looked at the second oven that was sitting unused.
I replied, "There is a second oven right there you could have used. I had this set to 250 so that my meatloaf wouldn't burn."
She came back with "We didn't know your things were in there."
I looked down at the not-tiny tray my tarts were on and then back at her, feeling very skeptical. "These needed to cook at 250 to reheat. How long have your calzones been in there?"
"10 minutes?" She seemed unsure.
I sighed heavily as I had been looking forward to trying the wares from the meatloaf bakery all week. "I hope they aren't burned. You should have asked since the oven was already on if someone was using it. There is a second oven that you could have used since this one was already on." I took my tarts out at this point and began to inspect them. They seemed fine, but because I was already ticked about my dinner being invaded, I added (somewhat snottily I admit) "These are $2 each. If they are burned, I only take cash."
She gaped at me for a moment but then walked away muttering like I was the stupid one. I packed up my stuff and retired to my room. They were perfect, but I'm still glad I've been letting other people do the cooking for me lately. Just ridiculous. I don't like people coming between me and my dinner! (See "That's My Salad!")

Um... so chick walked in, saw an oven already on, turned it up to 450 and put her stuff in without noticing there was a large pan of other stuff already inside. What, did she think the Magical Oven Fairies turned it on just for her? /facepalm

That was my first thought as well. Are these meatloaf tarts invisible, or the size of a nanoparticle, that she couldn't see them?
Or did she just not care ...

I'm thinking she just didn't care. Besides, if she used the off oven, she'd have to wait soooo looooong for it to heat up.

Nope, she was stupid. Why would the oven be on unless it was in use? Duuuuh!!

I'd have been tempted to turn the oven either down really low/off or up REALLY high after she walked away muttering after that display.

Draco, I thought about it. I really did. But then I'd be just as bad as her.

The fact that she didn't know how long her own food had been in there suggests her Calzone would have burned on it's own.

Edited for my own slant. It seems to take much less time to heat up an already partially hot oven than to heat up one from scratch. It might only be 10 minutes difference but it appears forever to a SC!
