A friend was talking about a tv show from a while ago about a cop whose wife and may or may not have been killed. He sees the kid during the day, mourning his mom, and his wife at night, mourning her son.

The plot is much more complex than your friend discribed. It was a good, well written and well cast show. (I liked it anyways)
Which is probably why they cancelled it. Hopefully it will get picked up by a cable channel.
