  • Stop blaming me for your own idiocy!!

Background: In blackjack, you can have more than one bet in a box. The person who has the bet at the front, does the hitting/standing, and the other people who have bets in the box are basically taking their chances on whether the front player will win or not.

Warning - this will get long and technical D: I'm sorry.

So. Here are the characters, from right to left.
SOM: Sweet old man. He's at my FAR right, playing the last box, #7 (out of seven).
OOM: Other old man. He's sitting next to SOM, and he's pretty good natured as well. He's playing TWO boxes (#6 and #5, and this will become important.
DI: Drunken idiot, the star of this story. Ostensibly, he's playing #4.
RP: Random player. He's not actually sitting at the table, he's hanging back a bit because there are no free boxes. He's one of those people who are placing a bet BEHIND others, and hoping for the best.
GI: Good natured Inebriate. He's been drinking, but he's the good natured kind of merry, not seriously sloshed. His box is #3, and has been all night.
AW: American woman. I've dealt to her before, and she's good value. Hers was #2.
Other: Quiet, and sitting by himself at #1, he doesn't come into the story much.

I asked for final bets. OOM hadn't quite got that far, and so though #5 was technically his, it was still empty from having lost the previous hand. DI, too drunk to realize it wasn't his box, placed his bet in #5 instead of #4.

RP, seeing #4 standing empty, placed his bet there.

OOM realizes what DI had done and says, hey mate, this is my box, yours is there.

DI moves his bet to #4, shoving it in front of RP's bet.

I call no more bets, and draw the cards. I have an ace. #6 has a blackjack and is dealt with immediately. I go around, and Other, AW and GI do their thing.

When I get to #4, I pause for a second. Technically, #4 is under the control of DI, because he's been playing it the whole time. The problem is, for THIS hand, RP's bet was in the box first. Furthermore, despite me looking to DI to act, he's completely ignoring me, away with the fairies. RP, on the other hand is waving that he wants to stay on 16. I get sick of waiting for DI, assume he's given control of the box to RP, and move on.

OOM has 20 and sits. SOM also has 20 and sits.

Now we come to me. I draw my cards, which are a two and a four - I now have seventeen, and I proceed to pay/take my way around. Until I get to #4, and DI starts to kick off. It's his box, he protests, and he didn't get to act, and I didn't even ask him what he wanted to do, and waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah.

Everyone else is telling him to let it go, that his was the second bet, that he wasn't even paying attention, but he WILL NOT LET IT GO. So the pit boss gets involved, and it turns into a HUGE reconstruction. We replay from the point where DI thinks he should have been allowed to control it. He chooses to HIT, which takes his sixteen to EIGHTEEN. OOM and SOM still want to sit.

Only, now, when I pull, I end up with twenty one. Meaning, because this guy was insisting on reconstructing the whole thing, we were held up for a good twenty minutes, and everyone ended up losing.

Now, people are going to say that if he missed his turn, then yes, we SHOULD have reconstructed the hand and made sure he got his due. HOWEVER. If, by doing that, you're holding up an entire table of people so they can't play for twenty minutes, and in the process screwing every single one of them out of winning the hand (whereas he would have been the only one who lost had he not kicked off), you're going to become very unpopular. Especially when you blame the dealer and start cursing at me for leaving you out/not giving you a turn/ignoring you. Hey, buddy? YOU were ignoring ME, and everyone else at the table who tried to get your attention!! You missed out because of YOUR screw up, not ours!!

I was called into the shift manager's office a little later for an unrelated reason, and he and I ended up discussing the whole debacle. According to the pit boss, courtesy dictates that if a player is playing in a box, that belongs to them until they say otherwise. BUT. DI was an idiot, he was drunk, and he wasn't even paying attention. In the words of my manager, if he had wanted to play, he would have played, and I was right in assuming that his silence meant he was giving control to RP.

The end result? A HUGE mess, twenty minutes worth of camera calls and reconstruction, another ten minutes and a bottle of champagne each for OOM and SOM (In the process of reconstructing, they ended up having to pay back money I had given them because they had won, going by my first total, and lost when the hand was replayed).

They threw DI out afterwards, and good fucking riddance.

Bonus suck: To the lady who got shitty at me the night before that? Do you want to know why I didn't give you a card? Because your hand signals are so, so tiny that they're incredibly hard to read. Yes, I incorrectly misinterpreted what your gesture was, but when you have a PIT BOSS telling you that your hand signals are too small, then that's on you. Not me. I don't read minds. And when the pit boss leaves, and you go back to teeny, teeny signals, and I have to tell you AGAIN that they're too small to read? The correct response is not to draw your arm back and SLAM your hand down on the table and then ask me "Is that big enough for you?"

If you hadn't got up and stormed out after that hand, you would have been escorted out. Security saw your little tantrum and were already converging when you picked up your shit and flounced. Don't ever come back.

Now, I'd like to digress from my prepared remarks to discuss how I invented the terlet...

Sounds like they would have been unforgiving.

Why wasn't DI just kicked out anyway? His inability to pay attention cost everyone else money. He's lucky he didn't get his lights punched out by another player.

Personally I think in those situations it should be up to democratic vote. Those playing at the table, want to reset and play again?

        "NAY!" "NAY!" "FUCK YEAH!" "NAY!"

Sorry, you're SOL. Especially because replaying the entire hand effects the entire table, and not just him. They should have a say in it.

It's so I can get ideas out of my head, I decided to put it in a blog in case people are bored or are curious as to the (many) things in progress.

At the casino I work, we don't have "back betting" per se. If more than one player wants to put money on the same spot, they have to hand it to the person who 'owns' the spot. One hand, and one hand only, may place and remove money from any given spot, and only that person may signal what they want done to the hand. And yet I still get people complaining about "Well, it's not like this in Vegas!" Yeah, well look around, we're NOT in Vegas, ever think about that?

ETA: Also, we don't do the "rebuild the hand and let them hit" thing. At best, they'll get their money back and we move on to the next hand. Rebuilding the hand takes too much time, and time, especially in a casino, is money, not only for the house but for the other players as well, who are unlikely to sit and wait for that to happen.

          Dealer hits... 21. Table loses.

This happens more often than most people want to believe.

If I was playing your table I would have throttled DI. I don't really care about gambling, but I'm super competitive when it comes to Blackjack. (I've been play "21" since I was 9.)

Actually i have a few friends who call Blackjack "FuckYouGreg". If we go to a casino, they always say stuff like "Do you wanna go play FuckYouGreg?" or "hey, I'm going to go check out the FuckYouGreg table!" This is because my friend Greg*, who is a Blackjack dealer, is a goddamn jinx. No matter how well I am playing, or how good my night is going, the moment Greg starts to deal I start to lose.

So once at a charity Casino Night I was playing Blackjack and doing well. But everytime they switched the dealer to Greg, I would starto lose. So by the end of the night everytime they switched to Greg I would just get up and say "FuckYouGreg" and go get a drink or play another table.

Ironically, I'm actually Greg's good luck charm. If I am at the table, or next to the machine, when he is gambling he cannot lose. Which I think is the reason he's my jinx. If he can't lose, I can't win.

Heh. I used to deal blackjack for a company that did casino parties. I'm a regular ice queen as a blackjack dealer, so you wouldn't like me any better than your friend Greg.
