embarrased by my fellow citizens

I have an old college friend who works as a tour guide in Germany. He sometimes does tours of former concentration camps. He posted the following exchange on Facebook today:

Surreal conversations at a former concentration camp:
me: "so, I am always happy to answer any of your questions"
American tourist: "I have a question, but nothing to do with the holocaust... Who is Chaka Khan?"
me: "??????????"
American tourist: "She is staying in my hotel and I heard she is famous... do you know who she is?"
me: "A singer from the 80´s..."
American tourist: "Do you remember what she did? ...Any famous songs?"
me: "Uhm? ...(singing...) Chaka, Chaka, Chaka, Chaka Khan Chaka Khan, Chaka Khan, Chaka Khan Chaka Khan, let me rock you, let me rock you, Chaka Khan let me rock you"
American tourist: "Oh yeah! I remember that song... Really? Chaka Khan sang this?"

Being an American who once lived in a non-English-speaking European country and was exposed to American tourists there (who somehow didn't realize that I was also American and could understand every insulting, idiotic thing they were saying), I have often felt the need to apologize to the rest of the world on behalf of my country.

I think the TSA needs to start screening for stupidity.
