I'm working another hotel's front desk. Guy calls in, tells me he and his family come every year. I know from experience (the "I have cancer, you will break the rules for me!" guest of yore) this is going nowhere good. Basically if someone tells you they come every year and they're not in front of you, nothing good will come of the conversation. They're trying to play the "you want my business, so you will do as I say" card. He wants to change his reservation. I tell him we only book x days in advance (it's less than a week ahead) and advise him to speak to Reservations. NO, NO, NO. He doesn't want to talk to them because he already talked to them (and presumably they didn't help with this desire). I will give him a view room at <slightly higher rate>. Well, I explain that I can't do that as I can't look at freaking October. Technically I can, but if I were to change someone's room type that far in advance (even if the view rooms WERE available), I would get written up, and I'm not going there.

We go round and round like this a few times. He demands that someone at that desk, specifically, be the one to change him to a view room. I explain again that we can't do it until October. We absolutely cannot do it until (date slightly before his reservation). He says he will call in on that date and we will change his reservation. I tell him we can't guarantee that view rooms will even be available on that date. He says he will call us on that date and we will give him view rooms.

At this point I finally manage to extricate myself from the call and leave behind a small novel in the notes. I really, truly feel sorry for whatever poor schlub gets that phonecall...and the one who checks him in.

After he hung up I looked over at the manager and asked her if I should stick a warning tag on the account (essentially "THIS IS A DIFFICULT GUEST" in terms so polite we can claim the instructions were for how we were to handle their luggage). She said the three two-paragraph notes already on his account were plenty.

One note essentially stated that he was difficult to speak to and had made an ass of himself to the person who initially made his reservation. Essentially he stomped all over him/her when they were trying to talk, and would not allow them to speak unless they were answering one of his questions. He also kept interrupting when they tried to explain our cancellation policy, which is very very required information for us to give out. Another said that some distant relative of the guest had called in already trying to get view rooms. I just...gah. If they were handing out superpowers, the ability to punch people over the phone would be temptingly high on my list.

You're right...nothing (or very little) good will come of this. Except maybe a good story for this forum.
I'm trying to see things from your point of view, but I can't get my head that far up my keister!

Why do people want a room with a view if they are a tourist to an area? Are they going to sit there with the drapes open looking out all day?

I go somewhere, I am out doing touristy crap. In my room I am sleeping, getting ready to sleep or getting ready to go out. I don't care if you give me a room around back next to the elevator and ice machine - I have insomnia anyway and the added noise wouldn't keep me up, I spent so much time in hospital that I can sleep with all the lights on and people walking around me at a party if I am tired enough.

I also don't need a room with a view, but you and I are not necessarily representative of the typical tourist/traveler. And some people do like to have a good view from their room for whatever time they are in it.

Myself, I did have one room with a great view. I was traveling up to Fort Myers Beach for a much-needed getaway, and my hotel upgraded my room from one across from the beach to one overlooking the beach, for free. Now, that didn't really matter to me so much as what ELSE the beach view afforded me a view of. As every morning, I'd wake up with my hard-earned hangover, and before taking off on my morning 20-mile-bike-ride-which-will-cure-all-hangovers, would sit on my balcony, drinking my much-needed Gatorade, and enjoying the view of all the lovely ladies in bikinis on the beach. Oh yeah...the view of the beach itself wasn't bad, either.

          Update

I don't really know what happened to this guy's reservation, except that it was absolutely cancelled due to the shutdown. Warms my dark cockles.

I guess one good thing came out of that shutdown. Plus you can tell the guy next time, "We can't book that far ahead! Don't you remember the last time you did that, the whole government shut down and your reservation was automatically cancelled?"

I liked the place we had in Key West - no view, but a really comfortable room with plenty of space and very quiet. Close enough to the fun areas to walk to [for most other people] We figure next time we are going to spend a week and really get to relax and do the touristy stuff. I found a park with a handicap equipped dive boat.

No room with a view needed here either. Just booked a cruise for myself and two friends for June and they were adamant they had to have a cabin with a balcony I told them fine booked them a double room with a balcony which is a little more expensive and myself I booked in an inside room. Why waste the money that could go to plenty of alcohol and other fun stuff such as the casino on the boat ^__^

The Resort has some awesome ocean view rooms, but many of my favorites are actually non-view. They have trees growing right up to the window and it feels like you're in a forest. It feels nice and secluded and private in those rooms, and despite the foliage they still get plenty of sunlight filtering through. Most of the rooms have the desks right up to the windows, too. Those are my favorite rooms.

That's a good silver lining to look at!
