  • Reciever - An Indie FPS with a twist!

Receiver is a very neat and unusual FPS developed by Wolfire Games as part of a 7 day game making competition. It has elements of a roguelike game, namely, procedural generation, random item and inventory spawning, permadeath and extremely difficult enemies, oh and one more thing that I'll tell you about at the end.

So, for the enemies, you have two kinds, killbots and taserbots. Killbots are relatively easy to take out, they're stationary turrets, you can take out several different parts on the killbot, be that the motor (stops it moving but it can still shoot you) the gun (stops it shooting but still aims at you) the camera (stops it seeing you) and the battery (shuts it down alltogether) taking out one is easy, taking out several that are in the same room, gets challenging. taserbots are flying, fast, annoying enemies who fly at you and hit you with a taser, you can either take out the camera (it wont spot you) or rake out the rotors causing it to crash to the ground. The thing about these enemies though? ONE hit will kill you, and you respawn with a whole new set of items.

Everytime you respawn, you get a random gun, from either a glock, colt or revolver and different amounts of ammunition. Now, here's where the challenge lies, sometimes you get a lot of bullets, sometimes you get few, to compund this, there's also the case of magazines, you get a random amount (but at least one) this can turn things from challenging due to a lack of ammo, to deadly, to a lack of magazines, if you have only one magazine and a taserbot comes after you, you're pretty much dead if you run out of ammo, as, running away from a taserbot while trying to reload is never a good combination.

Now, that one more thing I was going to tell you about? This game has "realistic" gun handling, that is, unlike in other games, where you just push a button to reload, this, you have to do all manually, from loading bullets into magazines one by one, to inserting (and taking out) the magazine, pulling the slide back and letting it go forward so you have one in the chamber, to decocking your gun, moving the slide back a bit to check you have a bullet in the chamber, ejecting your magazine and ejecting the shell thats already in your chamber (helps to accurately count your ammo) to opening the cylinder in the revolver, inserting bullets, emptying the cylinder and revolving the cylinder (although this last part serves no real purpose). Having the safety on is also important, although more from an ammo conservation point of view, if you dont have it on, you can and will jump whenever you hear a killbot/taserbot noise and sometimes that can cause you to shoot out of reaction.

The lack of ammo, combined with the lack of magazines, along with having to manually reaload makes for one tense experience, slowly moving your way through the level, looking for bullets, keeping an eye out for turrets and taserbots, to acutal combat, running out of ammo while taking on a taserbot can be a very "oh crap ho crap oh crap" experience.

There is a story to it, slightly, that you discover by picking up tapes scattered throughout the level. It can take you dozens of runs to listen to each individual tape, let alone how many runs it takes to get good enough to collect all of them in one run without dying.

Overall, this is a very good, tense and extremely different first person shooter. You can find it on Steam, or on the Developers site linked down below for $4.

Here's a first impression video of the game.

(Disclaimr: I am in no way affiliated with Wolfire Games, this is just a neat game I think some of you would like)
