  • The Engineer

I was reminded of this joke from the comments in this
thread http://www.customerssuck.com/board/s...ad.php?t=31744 regarding wanting to be paid for your training and experience.

This is not a new joke so some may have read it before.

A large corporation was working on downsizing its costs and so in order to cut some of those costs they decided to have one of their oldest and highest paid engineers retire. They hired some new young hotshot to take his place who being young and fresh was also being paid about 1/4 of what the older engineer was.

A few months go by and everything is going well, the company is saving quite a bit of money from their decision and are quite happy when the worst happens. One of their most critical machines breaks down. The young hot shot can't figure out exactly what is wrong with it. In desperation they call the older engineer and ask if he can come take a look at it. The old engineer smiles knowingly and says he can do it but he will have to bill them for his time. They hastily agree and he comes in.

So the old engineer shows up and takes about 30 minutes looking the machine over, takes out a piece of chalk draws an X on a part and says "Replace this part and the machine will work again good as new."

A week later the company gets a bill from the engineer for $10,000. The company of course a little put off sends him a letter asking him to itemize his charges.

In response they receive the following:

    1: Piece of Chalk - $0.50
    2: 30 Minutes Consultation Fee - $1
    3: Chalk X - $0.01
4: Knowledge of where to place chalk X - $9998.49
