It has gotten a bit cooler on a couple of days, but I found that turning off my a/c and opening my windows rarely brought any of that cooler air into my apartment. I think I will just wait until October 1 or sometime thereabouts to finally turn it off for good ...

If the wind isn't in the right direction to blow straight in, then you need to either open another window roughly opposite and make sure all the doors are open between them to get airflow, or set up a couple of fans at a reasonably high point in the room to blow the warmer air towards the window. A bit of a slow method, but it does work in the end.

People that are not used to the heat just don't know what is needed to keep from ending up in the hospital... or worse. This is no different than people that live in a hot place trying to deal with snow for the first time

Words cannot express how happy I am that I bought a second-hand a/c unit when I first moved in. I had come from my mother's home which had central a/c, and I was pretty sure I would need this ... and I was right.

My apartment building has opened the penthouse (e.g. the party rooms ) as available at any time day or night to residents only during periods of extreme heat. They have also opened the ground-floor Breakfast Club room to people doing their laundry on that floor. I went in there one day and wished I had brought along a parka, LOL.

In my home area of the Oregon coast, home AC is not that common. Very rare for it to get hot enough there to justify the expense of putting AC in.

Here in Portland it's a different story. I have my ac going! It's two window units but they work great.

I used to tolerate the heat quite well BUT a couple of months ago I got diagnosed with sever hypertension (very high high blood pressure in the ER 230/124 meds have changed 9 times in 3 or 4 months) so that tolerance is not quite the same. NOW if the temps and humidity are high it saps me and I have to run the A/C in my bedroom just so I can sleep and recover. F THIS I HATE GETTING OLDER

This was brought to the forefront around the end of June when the temps here in CheeseHeadLandCentral hit the upper 90'sF and the humidity hit like 80%. 12 hours Friday night shift delivering and then a boatload l of closing work almost got to me. Normally I would tolerate this OK No more I guess???

.... And having all the windows open means that l get to share my bedroom with bugs and moths. I don't do hot weather.

There is a way to solve the bug issue fairly cheaply.

- Measure the windows you would like to keep open over night. (Draw them up with the measurements.)
- Look up wire screening at your local hardware place. Then look up soft tulle/net at your local fabric place. (You will need to use 2 pieces of tulle/net per window. The soft stuff has the smallest 'holes' in the fabric.)

- Work out which is cheaper.
- Get double sided tape or velcro if it's the fabric. (Velcro works best along the edge that you need for access to the handle if the window pushes out, with the rest double sided tape. If it's a slide up/down, velcro for all sides.)
- Get an upholstery stapler if it's wire screening and velcro for the side you need to open.
- Measure twice, cut once, then attach to windows.

You now have decent bug screens for not very much. They can also be great if you are renting and the owner doesn't want to get them.

I used tulle with velcro around all 4 sides for my window when living in Dublin. No more weird ass bugs for me. I only had a small window, but I ended up making the same for a housemate's window and it was still being used 4 years later. It was stuck onto the metal frames.

Some places also sell kits for bug screens. The few i've tried were fucking annoying to get to size and kept coming unstuck or the magnets weren't good enough for any breeze stronger than a sparrow's fart.

Heat is easy to cope with. Here, it's getting over 100 degrees Fahrenheit on a daily basis. But...our humidity is very low (live in a desert), and that makes ALL the difference. Just make sure to stay hydrated and don't do too much physical labor out in the sun and it's not too bad.

One thing to keep in mind is that our brethren in the UK mostly don't HAVE air conditioning, not in their houses. Businesses do, but not residences. Pretty darn silly of them, but there you go.

I absolutely hate the heat ... although it 's just possible that what I truly hate is the humidity. It's like living under a wet wool blanket.

It's currently 27C/81F here, but the humidity is down (!) to 49% so it's pretty decent. Yesterday was even cooler. I've got the windows open and the a/c switched to "fan only". We'll see how long it lasts ...

Winter can come back anytime it likes.

Tuesday of next week it's supposed to hit 99ºF here, and Wednesday is supposed to top out at 100ºF. Then temperatures are forecast to stay in the mid to upper 90's until August 8, where it's forecast for 97ºF, then it's forecast to drop into the low 90's for a bit.

Like many people, I dislike heat, especially when combined with the humidity one gets here in the DC area.

I do find it amusing when the local networks or whatever push out an "extreme heat advisory" message to our devices. As I remarked on my Facebook and to my friends, "'Extreme heat advisory,' or as we used to call it, 'summertime.'"

Seriously, though, if the heat could go away for a few days to let us recuperate before baking us some more?

I don't do heat either. I can't tolerate it at all. I hibernate in my house with my air conditioning all through summer. Now if work could just cool down, they keep it too warm for me in the summer. And if it's at all cool or refreshing outside in the morning, they have the damn HEAT on! So stupid.
