  • Scammer can't scam (LONG)

    Interesting one tonight:

Woman bought X at our store "she says" when it was on clearance. But, you see, we only had one. So she drove to another of our stores 25 (yes TWENTY-FIVE) miles away to buy two more. Now I must state at this time that this was neither food nor life-saving medicine.

So she comes into my store tonight because she thinks that she deserves a refund of the difference in price. In theory, a plausible ideal. But this was not to be ....

First of all, if you *want* something, rather than *need* it (as in it's not food or medicine) why the heck would you drive 25 miles BEFORE you checked with that store to make sure it was the same price? Taxes and such *do* differ between cities and counties, after all.

Second, you brought in the *supposed* clearance product. Yay for you! At least you didn't pull the "I DESERVE a refund but I don't have the product" scam. However, there is no clearance tag on that product. ALL of our stores clearly mark clearance items with not one, but two, tags. The only reason I don't think you brought it up here from the shelf is that I did see you enter with the product.

Third, you have no receipt. Well, no that's not exactly true ... you have the receipt from the other store, showing the two that you bought. However, you have no receipt from our store, showing that you bought it here and it was, indeed, on clearance.

See, here's the thing. Our store is part of a world-wide chain of drugstores. We have "procedures", OMG do we have procedures. EVERY single item that is marked for clearance has not one, but TWO, tags on it, showing the original price and the clearance price. So, even if you don't have a receipt, then this product should have those tags on them. But no, you evidently removed them, OR you brought in one of the products you bought from the other store.

Without a receipt, the best I can do for you is a store credit (and that's even taking your word for it that you bought it here on clearance). Well, no, that's not good enough!!!!! I promise her that is indeed the only option for a no-receipt return. In fact, I had just gotten off the phone with the store manager to verify this, in THIS particular situation (I had a heads-up from the cashier before I actually started this transaction with you).

What's that??? You don't believe me???? I assure you, that is SOP in the retail business. What's that??? No, it's not, Walmart and CVS let you do this all the time?? They let you return items without a receipt and take your word for it as to the price you paid???????? I think not.

I said "we are not Walmart or CVS, all I can do for you is a store credit". She loudly proclaimed that I was wrong, so I suggested that she talk to the store manager (gave her his name and times he is in the store). Excuse me???? You don't need to talk to him, you got your answer????

Why yes you did, honey, yes you did
