I can't go with what the patron tells me, becasue either they left off something important or they are assuming we have something.
So a lady comes up to me asking for Train to Lisbon. I look up that title and do not see it. I ask for the author and she tells me "there are two authors". She also says, "I saw it in the catalog. "Actually I would have found it if I went by "word" search then "title" search, but I go to my trusty friend "google". Which finds Night Train to Lisbon. So I tell the woman the correct title and she says, "Night Train to Lisbon", like that is the correct, duh. So I find the book by Emily Grayson, and I wonder who the second author is. I tell her I find Emily Grayson and she said, "that's not the right author." Then I realized, she meant that there were two diff. books by 2 diff. authors, not that the book had two authors.
So I find the correct book and tell her, "It's checked out. Under status it says "Due 2-5-2009". That's why you couldn't find it. You want me to place it on hold?"
Which then leads to her giving me her full name when I asked for her last name. I kept on asking her "is that just your last name?" and she "yes". Of course, I'm not able to place it on hold, until I go into the Circ. function and find her last name. I would have just gone with I thought would be her last name, but I kept on misspelling it, since it was an odd name.
So next person asks me to "help me find Saw V on the shelf". Now, the dumb thing to do is assume the person checked the catalog and saw that it was on the shelf. But I looked it up in the catalog and sadly informed her that it was checked out but I can put a hold on it. She said she didn't have her card.
