  • Hotel Newbie

As background, I'm in between apartments - my old lease ran out, and there's a shortage of rentals in Helsinki at the moment. This means I'm staying in hotels for a while, and going to estate agents whenever I can.

So tonight, I checked into a hotel I hadn't tried before, in a town some way out of the city (but still in commuting range), as it was a *lot* cheaper than any of the ones in the city itself. Now, of course, there are obvious reasons why this is so...

    1) It's in a commuter town, not in a capital city centre during peak international tourist season.

    2) It's on the upper floor of a building that contains a bar and club - in fact, the same people seem to run all of these things together. So it's not very quiet. Right now there appears to be some kareoke (or else some very bad live music) going on. I think I can put up with that for a while, given the circumstances.

    3) The services are basic - little more than bed and breakfast. That's fine by me, I can cook simple meals at the office before coming "home" on most days, and I have an unlimited data plan on my phone so I'm still on the 'net.

    4) The subject of my post - the staff are not all very experienced...

Mistake #1: They first put me in a room that hadn't been cleaned from the previous night.

Mistake #2: They charged me the rate for a double room, rather than a single person. The difference in price wasn't huge, but it does make a difference to how much I've got left.

To their credit, however, they realised both of these problems without my having to complain, and sent the original bar-wench up to sort it out with me.
