  • Waist Deep In Balloons

I can't believe this happened to me. I feel so incredibly stupid for doing it, and even though it has been months since it's happened, I can't help but feel really stupid over that mistake.

Anyway... I work at a "extreme retail" store, and I often, on the weekends, do Balloons.

It's a hellish thing, doing balloons. It takes little over a minute to do one balloon, and most orders have anywhere from 5 - 40 of them in them. And on Saturdays we have so many balloons that I need help just to keep up with the times.

Well... It's organized that the head-cashier, the night before, puts out the next day's balloons. What I didn't know is that she put out the day afters as well.

Let's just say it was the 22nd (I honestly don't remember what date it was, but let's use that). So there was balloon orders for 22nd and the 23rd. Something I didn't know.

Now, at this point I am still new at balloons and the pace is stressful. So I kept grabbing the bags and doing up the orders.

Until I realized... that more than half of them were for the wrong day. I had more than 5 orders of balloons that were completely wrong.

I felt so horrible once I realized. That I had wasted over 40 balloons at the very least. And that's over 40 bucks of profit right there. I knew I couldn't pay for them, and I felt absolutely bad.

The head-cashier apologized for putting them there, but really, she shouldn't have apologized, I should have checked the dates more clearly.

So... this is what I did to try to make up for it:

    1. I re-organized the balloon orders.
    2. I did all the orders up to the current time that I had to do. For that day.
    3. I made "For Sale" signs and put them all on the accidentally made bouquets.
    4. I re-made the order-bags for all of the mistakenly made balloons.
    5. I put everything back to where it should have been at that point had I not made such a terrible mistake.

In the end, all of the balloons where bought that I had accidentally made. And the last 5 or so we gave for free to small children who behaved in the store. And the next day went off without a hitch and every customer got their orders to exactly how they wanted.

In the end... it worked out alright. But I still feel horrible for that mistake.

I now make doubly sure that I never mistake dates again. And, guess what, it's never happened again.

    Ugh...

    Never again!
Woman: *points to row of glue-sticks* Is this where your glue-sticks are stocked?
Me: Why yes... yes that is.
