  • Black Friday Shifts

With Black Friday looming on the horizon, I figured this would be a good time for us to share our pain.

Myself, I'll be working 12:30 pm - 12:30 am. That will be 6.5 hours supervising Point of Sale, and 5.5 hours of supervising my sign management team. With a little luck, we'll have the ad set on time, and I'll only work the 12 hour day I'm scheduled for rather than the 14 hour day I'm expecting.

On the plus side, I don't have to be at work at 4 am when the store opens.
Expect great things, but you'll get what you get.

Everyone wanted to work early in our store, so they were more than happy to let me work my usual shift. Only trouble is they want me in at 2:30 instead of 3, which means I get off at 11. They are going to be paying me overtime since I can't close out for the day until the Service Desk is closed (which happens at 11) and then I have at least 1/2 hour of administrative stuff to do as well as pulling the SD tills and my Service Coordinator base and counting it down...and that is assuming that there is no 3rd shift drama or problems that I have to deal with.

There is another SC who is working Friday night (she wanted to shop the Black Friday sales), but she normally is the morning SC and flat out refused to work as SC at night. It kinds of pisses me off that she can not be night SC (although she is a bit of a ditz and real emotional and really can't even handle first shift SC which is much easier), but I have worked plenty of morning shifts...even back to back with a closing shift the night before which only left me with about 3 hours for sleep with my long commute).

Well, I was originally scheduled to work the same shift I worked the last two Black Fridays, 5:30AM-3PM (possibly being cut loose early once the major rush ended).

However, without being consulted, they switched me to a bloody split shift, so now I am working 5:30AM-noon, then 6PM-10PM. So lucky me gets to open AND close on Black Friday.

Why they didn't ask me if that was OK is just BS, especially since the original schedule had already been posted for a few days before they changed it.

Yet another reason why I need to get out of that store.

Well, i don't do retail, but i will be driving a cab that day, 6A to 6P. I do remember one of my Black Fridays at Wallyworld, being the hyperactive nut i am, and working in electronics, one of the busiest areas, i got the GM's permission to work as long as i wanted so long as i didn't go into OT. Took management three tries to convince the computer that yes, i really had worked 7A to 11P.

            6:30-3:30 Thanksgiving day
            12-6pm Black Friday.

Not too big a deal. Certainly less painful than all the poor retail slaves.

The bad part is that we WILL be busy both of those days. Certainly busy enough to have a third person on most of the time. But the DM made the manager cut a ton of hours out of the schedule, so now we're down to two the whole time.

10:30 pm Thursday night to 7 am Friday morning for me, so I get to experience the most frenzied part of Black Friday.

Then I'm back in at 10:30 Friday night to clean up all the stuff that didn't sell and restock the salesfloor.

Wednesday is a supermarket's Black Friday.

Thankfully I'm only working 6:30-10pm on Selfscan, and 10-midnight doing whatever. I may or may not be working Thanksgiving, and I'm off Friday. Woo.

I'll be in at some crazy, early morning hour, work ten hours, and then be back in at 10 on Saturday and don't know what I'll be working on Sunday. First weekend I've worked in probably three months -- joy.

Thank the Force my current position doesn't let me to close. The horror!
Eh, one day I'll have something useful here. Until then, have a cookie or two.

My McD's is not too far from a WalMart and we open at 5. So, people going out to shop and wanting breakfast superfast...not cool. I volunteered to work and then later on when it was too late, I realized what day I volunteered.

Fast food is affected too, especially by the Walmart.
