Well, maybe not ever. I'm sure someone could top me easily here. But for me, this sucked really hard, and has left me kinda crumpled afterwards.
I'm a shift supervisor at the security site I work at. I got in tonight to find out that the four staff members I normally have is now TWO, plus a trainee, because we simply can't find people to fill the shifts.
Now, I know a lot of you work short shifts, but Graveyards are already running with the absolute bare minimum at 4. We have 1 guard for the main campus complex (Which is insane, he can walk all night and not cover the whole thing in 12 hours), 1 for the two newest (And most expensive buildings), 1 for the 24 hour computer lab, and 1 mobile driver to handle the satellite buildings, parkades, and off-campus sites.
Someone must be in Control at all times, and that's usually me, or a trained officer. I fortunately had one officer who was trained, as I'm the only guy working with a driver's license.
But, one officer MUST be in the 24 hour computer lab, and the trainee didn't know lockups or unlocks yet... which meant I had ONE officer to lockup and unlock the ENTIRE campus, provide accesses, patrol, and respond to emergencies such as fire alarms.
Did I mention procedures REQUIRE two trained officers to respond to any emergency?
As an added bonus, I had TWO parking lots that I had to set aside reserved stalls for. A LOT of reserved stalls. And since this was last minute, groundskeeping hadn't put out any barricades for me, so I had to go get them myself.
Oh, and there was also the payroll reconciliation, which HAD to get done.
I did the only thing I could. I stuck the trainee into the computer lab, pulled out the very nice and eager to help gentleman who's normally in there, and worked him like a dog. I got the other guard (Who was the only Control center trained one) to do his lock ups, put him in Control, and jumped into the Mobile vehicle to get the parking lots blocked off.
It was doing this that I dropped my cell phone and cracked the screen.
Somehow I managed to get everything done, and for once, people were patient, and didn't complain or act demanding.
Of course, this meant I didn't train the trainee at ALL, and it looks like this sort of staffing level will be the norm for a while.
To top it off, rumors have been increasing that the site is going to go in-house. It'll be a gradual shift... but what'll be the first to be switched over? Supervisors.
Except, the site wants Peace Officers for their supervisors, so they can issue citations for smoking and littering and such.
I am not a Peace Officer.
So, I'll likely have the choice of a pay cut and a demotion, or finding a new job, as early as January.
So... yeah, I kinda dragged myself home with my tail between my legs, feeling pretty hopeless.
I worked HARD for this promotion, and I love this site, but... there just isn't any way for me to win.
