Holidays suck when you have to work

What's the point of celebrating a holiday if you have to work? I hate having to work on a holiday!

Just a warning, I'm in a bitchy mood today. I have to work tonight, and it's Thanksgiving. I've been out of commission most of this week because of an abcessed tooth. It hurt bad enough that I had to get a loritab prescription and an antibiotic prescription. Being in and out of drug-induced sleeps the last few days has left me feeling messed up, and I'm now going back to work.

This is a pointless thread other than just feeling the need to vent. At least I'm honest about that I guess. I just feel like crap today, and I'm just worn out. At least the pain is back to a level that can be managed with ibuprofen, but I have to wait until after Thanksgiving to get in to see the dentist.

This has been a fun week. I only have to work four hours, but it's still work. Four hours of dealing with customers. I haven't had any particularly sucky customers lately, but I still have to be there on a holiday. Yeah, I know, I'm not alone in having to work on a holiday. It's just that between two jobs and a full course load at school, I get little to no free time. I'm just wore out.

Thank you. I was mainly just feeling bitchy earlier, and needed to vent before going to work. I just hate the idea of working on holidays. Holidays are meant to be spent with people we want to be around. For me, that means family and friends, not customers. For others, that certainly does mean staying away from family, too.

It wasn't terrible, but still sucked tonight just because I had to be there. The first half of the night I felt like I was in a stupor since I hadn't been out of the house in a few days. I only had one sucky customer, and I did tell her my exact opinion of her (certainly not professional, but she did deserve it for her attitude) and told her to leave. She might complain. I could get in trouble, but I doubt it. My manager is good about ignoring most petty complaints. Oddly, I felt better about being at work after that. The rest of the night went okay.

Hey there... I'm new here but I just wanted to say I know how you feel! For the past five years I've always worked a job where it was required to work on holidays. However, I just started a job in retail for the first time (been there for a week). It hurts having to miss out on holidays and spending time with the family... and then I get all of those "Happy Thanksgiving!" messages... lovely, I turned off my phone. People say to me, "You're luck you even have a job!" Which I guess is true, expect that it's part time and doesn't pay me enough to survive on. So I slave for eight hours today, for barely a penny, while my family has a huge Thanksgiving dinner without me.

The one nice thing about today is when I came home from my lunch break and my bf had bought a turkey breast. But we don't have a microwave and I had to eat it cold to get back to work on time, but it's the thought that counts, right? And another nice thing is... it's over, lol.

Yeah on the one hand I understand why we're open, but it still sucks big time. I know exactly how you feel.

I got one better. Not only did I work every day Wed-Sat on Thanksgiving weekend, I got to work on a Vietnamese concert, a Chinese concert, and two five-hour days of a polka festival. All at my normal rate until I hit my 40, no holiday pay. Casinos are generally open 24/7/365 and on top of that corporate tells us that it is a cultural value in Asian cultures to gather the family together on holidays and go gamble in the casino, thus most of our holidays we bring in entertainment for them. Christmas Eve will be a Vietnamese concert, Christmas Day will be a Chinese concert. Same deal with Valentines Day. I'll be working New Years Eve and Day as well, but at least that will be in English.
