I still like this as an option.

Please, if you're in a darkened theatre watching a live show, don't check your phone. Your face lights up like the moon.
    I replied:

And as we all know, mooning people is extremely rude.

    LOVE it!!!!

And that is why I prefer to keep my phone set to Do Not Disturb on Sunday mornings during church.

It is reminding me of the girl who got a concussion from a "falling" armrest. She kept saying it's was on vibrate and I bent down to take the call.

Whenever I do security at the movies, we always have at least one person in the theater keeping an eye out for cell phones.
I don't suppose you guys are permitted to bring flashlights with you to point out/look for offenders? Or, perhaps, those high-intensity halogen puppies that taxi and pizza delivery drivers use?

Only times I've ever had to check a phone in a theatre is if I was on-duty as MOD. In those cases the volume is already off, and I shield the screen with my hands/body. If it's a work call, I stuff the phone back in my pocket, head outside as discreetly as possible, and take the call out there (if it's not a work call then I ignore it until later). Then when I'm done head back in as quickly and quietly as possible because I want to watch the movie, dammit!

I'll admit I've taken my phone out in a movie before. But I had it in my lap, brightness turned down as low as possible, volume muted, and ringer turned off. No one had problems, no complaints were made. Everyone was happy. It's not hard, just adjust the settings, anyone with a basic understanding of their phone can pull it off.

Whenever I do security at the movies, we always have at least one person in the theater keeping an eye out for cell phones. If they're out during a movie, where they're allowed to have them, we'll give the person a warning once. Do it again, and you're out.

If they sneak a phone in a movie where phones aren't allowed, they get booted the first time they pull it out.

If I wasn't working and it was a person near me with their phones out I'd tell them to put it away. If they didn't, I'd go find someone to take care of the problem.

You are far more patient than I. Five minutes or less if that would have gotten me out to find someone to take are of the problem. At least one chain has instituted the 'no cell phone during movie' ban here.

What amazes me (not in a good way) is the ones doing it during a 3D movie! *sigh* Fortunately, I'm can tune out almost anything at this point. I probably wouldn't notice if Henry Cavill himself went streaking through the theater chased by the paparazzi!
I think I would notice that! One of the best things about superhero movies is the hot men in tights.

No cell phone shenanigans in my showing, although I was sitting next to this kid who couldn't have been more than 6 or 7 and kept asking questions all through the movie. Seriously, kid, pay attention!

Are all of you trying to say that we shouldn't text in a movie theater ...

In USA Magnited States of America, where you are free to text in a theater!

It's too bad that more movie theaters aren't like the Alamo Drafthouse.
    Warning: this video is NSFW.

I will admit, I sometimes will take my phone out and futz around on it during a movie--

    HOWEVER!!

If I suspect I'm going to do this, I take pains to sit in the back row, away from other people, if possible, and aim the screen away from them as well, so as not to disturb them.

If I have to sit elsewhere, or if I have someone sitting next to me, then the most I'll do on my phone is check the time.

In other words, I use common sense and common courtesy. Neither of which are very common.
