  • Brain broken, please use other gate

From Hubby's workplace. At the gated community he works at, the gate has a laser scanner that scans a barcode sticker on members' vehicles. This scanner broke, forcing everyone to enter via the visitor lane.

I had to wait a whole minute!

There was a line-up about ten deep at the visitor gate. Most had barcodes though, and were waved through; only one was a guest who needed to be checked in.

A short while after the line-up, the security gate received a call from the office. Apparently one of the residents had complained that they had to wait "forever" to get past the gate. The office was informed that the delay was a minute at most.

    Why does it keep breaking?

During the evening rush, the patrol guard was pulled to stand at the members' gate and manually open it for members. They reopened the members' lane for a two-hour window during the busy time, with the guard standing next to the gate clicking it open.

Unfortunately, the guard apparently was invisible, as Hubs received complaints that the gate kept getting fixed and then breaking again. No, it was never fixed in the first place. The guard standing out there wasn't doing it just to personally greet you.

    Ignoring the cones

They had used orange cones to block off the broken gate. Hubs had not one, not two, but three residents drive around the cones and stop at the broken gate. Hubs said nothing and simply clicked open the visitor gate for them and let them figure it out.

    Is it fixed yet?

Once the scanner was finally fixed, they reopened the lane. The cones were gone. People still came up and asked "Is it fixed yet?"

The winner, though, was one woman who Hubs saw come in three times during his shift. The first two times she used the members' lane, where the new scanner worked beautifully and allowed her vehicle to pass. The third time she pulled up to the guard shack to ask if the members' gate was fixed.

    *heavy sigh*
Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad.
