never see, I dunno, Hyenas, or Possums? Or Banana Slugs?
Same with the otherkin. Why are they never basilisks, or gorgons, or catoblepi?
Er? You've never seen a hyena furry? I've seen plenty, I've also met a few oppossums, and a couple Elephants. I admit, Banana slugs are new to me...
With the Otherkin, you're looking in the wrong direction to find Gorgons and basilisks. Try the ASFR groups to find those. (ASFR is something like, Androids, Stoning, Freeze, and Robots) I've only ever heard of Catoblepi in the realms of Castlevania. Never in myth.
Out of curiosity, do you consider Nagas 'cute'? Cause they're extremely popular as well in the Otherkin community.
As an Otherkin, I see myself as a shapeshifter, filling whatever role I feel like filling. There are definitely days that I don't feel like being cute

It refers to a subculture that draws and in some cases dresses up as anthropomorphic animals. The drawing can range from tame (SFW) to disturbing (As all drawn porn does) and the costumes in some cases are used for fur parties, where they may act like they have sex in them. Where in the spectrum the individual lies of course depends on the individual, and as with anything, the more extreme stuff is more well known (the sexual fur parties have actually been used on CSI Miami I believe).
actually those 'parties' don't happen since you would overheat in those suits, trust me I know

kidding around aside furs are perfectly sane normal people who hate sc's as much as you, honest

Well, that's the first part answered. As for the second, Don't make me go find that HP fanfic to prove that horrific fanfics aren't limited to any subgroup. Besides, why pick on furryfic when slashfic still exists?!?!
    Yeah... "My Immortal," anyone?

You make an interesting point, though. Generally the members of a fandom (and I even find the word "fandom" annoying, for some reason) that annoy me most are the ones who write abysmal fanfic of any stripe, so perhaps there's an underlying current of annoyance, the "Bully Reflex," if you will, that goes beyond any one particular genre.

My particular objection to fanfic is that if you're going to invest that much creative energy, write it about your own characters. That way you can look into actually publishing for money instead of "squees!"

But there's not much worse than slashfic, unless it's furry slashfic.

    lol

also i think the second episode of She Spy did that theme. didnt know what a furry was until i saw that
imagine CSI...with a cast of fluffy-brained bombshells... so stupid it was funny

then a friend of mine explained "Yiffing" to me... (some of the furrysex sound effects they make)

"cool" animals, like Wolves or Foxes, or "cute" animals like Raccoons and Rabbits
    how about Werewolves?
    or wolverines?

(LOL the fanfiction comment got me thinking... yeah i'm a fanfic addict...)

So... why is it that people who identify as furries always pick "cool" animals, like Wolves or Foxes, or "cute" animals like Raccoons and Rabbits, but you never see, I dunno, Hyenas, or Possums? Or Banana Slugs?
    <snip>
I do realize that not everyone in the hobby writes derivatively puerile furry Star Trek Fanfiction where Kirk is like, an ocelot or something, and the author has written a furry version of themselves as the Mary-Sue star of the story.

I've met people who identified as collies, snakes, badgers, and owls. Its just one of those things.

For the same reason a lot of people think one song is like a reflection of themselves. Its just a common thing.

I've met people who identified as collies, snakes, badgers, and owls. Its just one of those things. I feel like a tiger/fox, and was actually told I have those characteristics before I realized its what I felt closer to.

But yeah, furries are definitely the bastard stepchild of Fandom in general. I think it may be a vocal minority that makes most people view furries as perverts in fusuits. I mean, I'm a LARPer for Bob's sake, and they trigger my bully reflex. If that ain't the pot calling the kettle black, I don't know what is. But again, it's a small percentage that make me look around for lockers to stuff them into, not everyone who thinks Anthropomorphism is an intriguing idea. I mean, Garou are still wicked bad, even though White Wolf has ruined the franchise.

At any rate, I try to make a distinction between "Anthropomorphic Animal Enthusiast" and "F---ing Furry," and I do realize that not everyone in the hobby writes derivatively puerile furry Star Trek Fanfiction where Kirk is like, an ocelot or something, and the author has written a furry version of themselves as the Mary-Sue star of the story.

I'd never heard that one before. Andara isn't quite so mixed up as all that, thankfully.

Not many would be, hence the chorus.

I've never yet found a good picture based off that song - one of these days, I'll have to commission one.

I've done research for classes, and that's the first time I've ever heard either of those claims.
The popular view of Freudianism is that every problem you have can be traced back to one or both of:

-desire to have sex with one or both parents
-the desire to cut your penis off (if male), or the desire to have a penis (if female)

My theory is that what Freud wrote was true of Freud.

Very nice. Reminds me - after a fashion - of Misty Lackey's Mis-Conception.

If anyone cares, my main furry persona can be seen here.

What she is, exactly, is incredibly complicated. But if anyone is intersted, I'm always happy to share.

*looks around* Wow, there appears to be an echo that expands upon my ideas in here... You do seem to do that to my posts a lot, Geek King.
If you'll look at the post times, I was typing my reply (and doing tech support) when you posted yours. No echo meant, just warped great minds thinking alike.

I'll see y'all there! Saturday Night at the Costume Contest, look for The Barber and the Baker.

I was the one who put the Spaceballs group together last year, just to give you an idea. Would love to meet you both!
I've actually not been to Starfest before. I actually got sort of roped into staffing this year since I'm staff for Nan Desu Kan in September. One of the head honchos for NDK is the head of security for Starfest (from my understanding) and sent out a memo to NDK staffers that they're somewhat understaffed for security and I decided what the hell? Doesn't mean I'll enjoy it any less. I'll likely be doing line control and the like.

That's only one part of the culture.
I did not mean to portray Furrydom as sexual deviants if that's how it came across. I know that there are many more levels as with any subculture. I merely was touching on the stuff you hear about most. If hopping into a live volcano feels right do it! (Read: If it makes you happy do it)
