People fear/mock/hate what they do not understand. People are individuals, and in anything there can be people who take things to extremes..and sometimes they give those things bad names.
Engaged to the amazing Marmalady. She is my Silver Dragon, shining as bright as the sun. I her Black Dragon (though good honestly), dark as night..fierce and strong.

Try going to a gamer based convention.
I've been going to a gaming convention three times annually for the last 21 years. And aside from the time where we hosted a M:tG qualifier, the typical gamer isn't particularly any more funk-ridden than any other con-goer.

Been doing the gaming/sci-fi/comic/furry con thing off and on for the last two decades. The only major difference is what the costumes end up looking like and the merchandise in the dealer room. That and the furry crew tends to be a bit more inclusive, generally.

I'm really lost on the fact that she thinks furries want to have sex with animals. It's a different thing, right?
Yup. Different thing. While there are, no doubt, zoophiles in the furry community, it's likely that the majority of such aren't furries, and the vast majority of furries aren't zoophiles and do not condone such activities.

I hate that stupid episode of CSI and that Marie Claire thing. There are a few furries who are messed up sexual deviants, but you get that EVERYWHERE. I mean, heck, look at some of the stuff some ANIME fans get into! I can never look at an octopus the same way again!

I am a furry, and I do not draw pornography, probably never will, and I certainly don't have relations with animals. People like that are ignorant, who choose to believe whatever is shoved conveniently down their throat because they'd rather do that than actually *gasp* experience the world for themselves and see how things really are with their own two eyes!

          W: Well I never!
"You never what? Think? Well, that's blatantly obvious!"

I'm not a furry, but I do love to dress in costume. I think many of us have the theatrical bug to some extent, it's fun to dress as and pretend to be something else.
I don't have an attitude problem. You have a perception problem.

I'm really lost on the fact that she thinks furries want to have sex with animals. It's a different thing, right? I'm not being a smart-ass, I just thought furries were people who liked to dress up in their fursuits. I hope I'm not offending anyone. That lady was a judgemental idiot.
Someone's already beaten me to it, but I'll elaborate on their point.

Not all furries get sexual pleasure out of it. A furry is basically someone who dresses up in an animal suit, but acts human.

Zoophilia is the practice of having sex with ANIMALS, but NOT dressed up as a furry. And don't just think of a horse or dog, I've stumbled across cats, pigs and dolphins...

There's a ton of other paraphilias out there that I would be more disturbed at than someone walking around in cat ears and a tail. Infantilism is one example: for the unfamiliar, it's basically dressing up as an infant (and even regressing in some cases completely) and getting sexual pleasure out of it.

You know, it seems to me people only started complaining about it after furries started doing it.

              SP=Stupid person.

SP: It's disgusssting! Full grown furries acting like infants!
Me: It's been around before furries.
              SP: It's still disgussssting!

I wouldn't consider myself a furry, but I do like wearing cat ears...

Probably another way I see furries is that it's like a second skin to them. Some crossdressers dress more because it's like slipping into a second skin for them rather than a sexual thing.

                    Oy. Hello broken record.

Furries are mainly just people who like anthromorphic animals. Fursuits are mainly for extended role-playing experiences, like those who dress up as Star Wars Jedis...

I'm not a furry but I have several friends that are. And I identify strongly with dragons and have at least one totem animal (my Facebook has several albums devoted to dragons, rabbits, and wolves). Plus I have a lot of non mainstream quirks so people like that piss me off. Ignorance is one of my biggest pet peeves.

Try going to a gamer based convention. Near as I can tell from having furry friends, the furries bathe regularly and male gamers seem to marinate themselves for prolonged periods of time.

*unless their gaming group includes a female, then they bathe in an attempt to get laid ...
I guess it would be more accurate to say that there are very few furries who are unwashed, while there is a higher percentage of unwashed non-furries at conventions. Doesn't seem to matter if it is sci-fi, gamer, or something else, it just seems like people want to save those few minutes by skipping a shower.

But like you say, sometimes all it takes is having a room booked by yourself and being the person who bathed most recently...

Closer, but still not quite there.

A furry is a fan of anthropomorphic animals who identifies that they are. No more, no less. As an aside, this also usually includes non fur-bearing and fantasy animals, so all you fans of, say, the Geico gekko or dragons aren't left out.

Some furries like to dress up. Some just like the art. Some are into the animation (stuff like, say, Puss in Boots and Disney's Robin Hood, for example). Some follow a more shamanistic path. Some think they're animals trapped in human form. Some like to collect plush (a minor subset does rather more than just collect it). And there are some who are only there for the company.

Now, there are plenty of people out there who would be furry but don't want to be associated with the fandom. It's a little bit silly, but that's cool, too.

Wow. XD Most of this applies to me. I collect feline-related plushies (I own all of the TY big cats), love anthro art and animation (my favorite animated movie, to this day, is Fievel Goes West), and I'm pretty sure I was a cat in another life. I don't dress up, but I do have a fursona. And I am not ashamed of any of it.
