Choking sound: like the kind you make when you're trying hard not to laugh?
No, more like the sort of choking sound that accompanies this face:

Which was pretty much the effect I was going for.

    I'm mean.

I once got someone who insisted that I had called her, and that I was someone else. I could not convince her that she had the wrong number, she kept calling me back, she even got her BF to call and argue with me. Luckily, it was only over a few hours.
Ugh. I went through that once. Drunken asshole kept calling me at 2am, 3 am, 4 am wanting so and so. I kept telling him he had the wrong number, he kept wanting to know who I was and why I wouldn't let him talk to so and so.

Uhm, cause I don't know so and so you drunk SOB. Finally, drunk SOB got the girl friend on the line who really started to rip into me. I had to turn off the phone to get some sleep. When I checked voice mail the next day it was full of messages to so and so about the "bitch" who wouldn't let them talk to him.

    Assholes.

I've had a couple of different people give out my number to collection agencies and such. One man in particular had quite a number of people looking for him, for a longish period of time.

Had one woman ask me (in the snottiest tone you can imagine), "Well, do you know where we can find him?" I replied that *he'd* better hope they caught up to him before I did, because they were only going to ruin his credit. I was going to beat him to death and smear his blood on the walls. There was a choking sound from the receiver, and I never heard from that particular creditor again.
Hmm. I might have to try that one. Fortunately, I haven't had that problem in awhile.

Tho thankfully I don't get many billy calls these days. Tho I'd rather get them vs the Political Surveys of America telemarking scam, or the Credit Services identity-theft bullshit.

Billy's calls are much easier to deal with. It's usually just some company giving him a call back to see if he wants repeat service. Or a friend who's trying to get in contact with him.

Some telemarketers and bill collectors have things set up that produce random numbers on the caller ID; they're lots of fun.

A few weeks ago I got a series of calls from 2am to about 3 am. First they cam from a private cell phone, then from one of the local walmarts. The guy left a garbled message, apparently he was trying to get together with someone for some "fun" after work. I should have handed the phone off to my boyfriend and let him have a few words with the late night caller.
This has actually happened a few times time to me. I guess since I have a cricket number it's easy for people to misdial.

It took me about 3 years to finally convince the collections people that I was not Susan, who had my cell number before me

When I got my cell phone, I kept getting calls for Crystal. Those have stopped. Then a few years ago, I was returning something to Best Buy. My brother bought me CoD. I don't care for FPS's so I exchanged the game. Anyway, they asked for my phone number. Then asked if it was Crystal.

    Miniature update:

I still get calls for Billy. Not as many now though.

But... I dropped the phone a couple of days ago and the flip top popped off. The phone was already in "meh" condition with some parts that had come off and a crack in a hinge so this pretty much solidified my decision to get a new phone.

Keep in mind this is just a cheap tracfone anyway, so I went to my old store - yeah I broke the phone just a few blocks away from where I use to work! I picked up one with a full keyboard, double minutes. With the company protection plan. In case I trash this one too. heh.

Then I went home, and called up tracfone to transfer the account. Cos I didn't want to go through this with someone else's used number. Plus I still had minutes on the old phone.

So... I can now say... "Billy, I didn't lose your number!"

So it got me thinking... I could change my number but that wouldn't really change anything. I'd just get someone ELSE'S old number. And then I might get stuck with collectors calling for Susie No Pay, or Johnny Check Bouncer.
Mobile networks are always cropping up & they're also always releasing new number ranges. Keep your eyes open & see if you can "get in" to a new company/number range - you'll guarantee it's nobody's old number, and you might even be able to pick a number that's easy to remember, or means something to you!

Do you guys have number portability over there?
